Second gear is good for pulling away if the road surface is icy, something that came in hand over the last few weeks.

For the best MPG, you need to make the best use of all the car's gears including first.

I was told that was not the case using all the gears

Higher gear better mpg is not the case."

Forget the gears, just drive using anticipation smoothly so you’re not on and off the gas and brakes all the time, lift off and roll when you can see the traffics not moving in front etc etc. If queuing for long periods turn the engine off, try not to have air con/heated rear windows on when not needed, don’t have windows open. Remove unnecessary weight from the car. Don’t warm it up on a morning just drive away etc etc

These will make more difference with a car that has a small engine IMO.

Being in a high gear with not enough revs will just make it labour and thats as bad as revving the nuts off it, just be in the middle. :)

Sound advice, i coast up to traffic or lights so i dont stop I crawl so im not stopped, i have only essentials in my car nothing unessential, I use heated rear screen just till i can see then i knock it off, my car doesn't have air con, just normal heater, i am guilty for leaving it to warm up tho :P, the turning off the engine off i wouldn't do that, cause the traffic is using crawling so never really stationary i can't really think of a situation in traffic where i would turn engine off, apart from parked outside a house waiting for example

I do 50,000 miles a year and always seem to be stationary on the motorways of this island  ;)

Tyre pressures are another thing to keep an eye on.

i check them once a week and use my pressure gauge on my foot pump and always keep my tyres @ 32 psi the tyre machine @ my garage is nearly always broken :P, same with my lights, tyres, oil and so on and i also clean my lights and windows once a week, the car just gets washed in the summer no point washing it in the winter :P

I was taught that having your handbrake on when you stop for more than 3 seconds is a must. My instructers reasoning was that if there were an accident and i was shunted from behind or any other angle for that matter the car would not roll after the accident, if you just had your foot on the brake and were shunted then the car could roll into another car as your foot would be forced off the brake.

Seems fairly simple to me.

I also agree on that learner drivers do need to practice more slower spead and clutch control in traffic. I am quite lucky that I had a lot of time practicing this with my instructer and ended up with great clutch control.

I see so many people rolling backwards its scary!

On the point about London coming to a standstill if everyone were to use their handbrake, what a load of rubbish. If you can not release your handbrake whilst pulling away using accelerator and clutch in a matter of seconds, there is no hope for you on the roads.

I agree with you tom, good clutch control is key and idiots that roll back cause accidents, my instructor told me same thing about handbrake about being rear ended and if there was a kid and u only used your foot brakes you couldn't stop with just that i see you have a nice picture of You Aygo black when its Black :P unlike mine
