Thermostat - 2003 2.0 Ltr Petrol

Does anyone know where to find the thermostat housing on my 2003 Avensis 2.0 petrol. I followed the top hose to the engine, expecting a nice shiny housing with a couple of easy to remove bolts, and instead found the hose attaches to what looks like a part of the engine casting.

The thermostat is housed at the lower return pipes connection with the engine block not in the upper flow to the radiator.

Depending on the engine type, the thermostat looks like in the attachment(s).

It may be difficult to get at and it's not a simple job to replace.
