Upgrading The Interior Light?

I still can not decide what is worst, when the interior light is on or off!

It must be the worst in automotive history!

Anyways, has anyone change it or added any interior lights?

You are right, dark, dark dark,

I went to car dealer with very, very old not working cars / parts (don't know the engl. word) and got three interior lamps from an old Audi A4.

Two from the rear side (onle left/right) both working with "old" 5W bulbs and another from the the rear door (estate/wagon) 10 Watt.

The rear door unit is now in the iQ in the rear door and the smaller types are in the footroom areas:

Halfrauds do some really cool LEDs in white or blue that are cheap but effective. The thing I have is a clip on light on the sun visor that is used by police etc for writing stuff when out on duty in the dark, it can be angled to any direction.

Here is the "place" to connect your additional light.

A 2 wire-line from every "new/real" light to this "place".

Turn the yellow plasticpart 90° to remove the A-pillar-cover with a click.

Note: my car is LHD (left hand drive).

@Brian

I like your leds, but there are not enough lumen to light the interior.

You're right LaLa. My leds are not enough lumen, but i'm not ready yet. Next upgrade is going te be 2 extra ledstrips that can be manualy turned off and on with the fisheye switch.

I became a "led-addict".

Hi Ruud,

Could you please provide more information about how you mounted the lights. In particular, I'd like to know:

- How to remove the ceiling(to mount the ceiling light like you did)

- Where you have connected the rear lights

Thanks!

Best wishes

Hi Ruud

I am very interesting in the grey boot liner (or boot buddy ?), what is your provider ?

Thanks a lot for your reply

Concerning interior lights, I put in Flexible LED Strip Car Lights, it works a treat and it's cheap(under dashboard) ! I also put up under the doors and it works only when doors are opened.

Thanks

Hello Uski, MD1, Bilmuche and Peluchette,

sorry for the late answer, but I'm not every day on the forum.

First of all, the grey bootliner I made myself, it was one of the first things I made, because my dogs were very unhappy with the standard situation, they stepped between the bench or felt while braking. The bootliner is foldable for easy mounting. I have to make some more of those for the dutch forum members.

Regarding the interior lighting, it's not so difficult. The wiring comes from the standard bulb, the opening for the new light in the center has been cut out from the ceiling, which is a pretty strong material (almost 1cm thick) which can easily hold the light.

From there, I opened the ceiling by removing the door-rubber (only the upper part) which gave me enough room to take the wire for the rear lights and direct that wire down- and backwards. The nice thing from taking the wire from the standard bulb is that, when you approach the car the lights go on already.

I think the top light cam from an old daewoo and the back-lights came from the rear-registration-plate lighting of a Mitsubishi Pajero.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more info.

Ruud

my own low tech solution. 2 'o' rings and a strip of velcro

It appears to be a small torch device strapped to the interior pull handle above the doors.

Hi

Thats exactly what it is, 24 led, square shaped torch , slipped into a couple of rubber 'o' rings held onto the handle with a velcro strip. the velcro also holds the handle to the roof. Cheap I must admit, but does the job spot on, throws enough light over the front seat area. Added benefit is you dont have to find anywhere to stow your emergency torch.

I've owned my little IQ for coming up to a year, which means the manufacturers warranty will be running out shortly.. So I can finally make a load of changes I've had in mind all this time!

Which leads me to this little thread.

I'm currently running two neon-like tubes in the foot wells for a boost of light, and then a mag light in the bit between the seats for searching for stuff!

Currently the two foot well lights are just connected via the cigarette lighter socket.

Basically I'm thinking about upgrading the interior light with a better LED, installing a boot light, and then perhaps some additional lights on the roof near the rear windows to fill the car with a bit of colour.

I was looking around really to see how people have been wiring this up. Would it be okay to run an additional 3 lights if they were only LED from the existing one? I'm pretty good at wiring household bits and pieces, but my experience with cars goes as far as a few amplifiers and head units!

I too fancy walking near the car to see it glow!

That's LED lights for you. That's the same reason they are not good enough for the house yet. You could fit the optional foot well lights.

Has anyone fitted the footwell lights as an option? If so do they help with the interior lighting?

The footwell are not made to light the car, just to be good looking, all the more they are hiden by the doors when the doors are closed...

I am actually thinking of SMD leds hidden somewhere on the doors or under the steering wheel...
