Rav4 T180 Brake Judder

The brake judder got worse on my 3 year old T180 ~22k. Dropped it in to my dealer who found all 4 discs to be warped. Toyota declined to cover under warranty as brakes are a consumable item which left me with a £700+ bill. No obvious signs of wear on discs or pads - in fact old discs measure identical thickness to new using vernier caliper. Toyota denied it was a common problem. Honest John (honestjohn.co.uk) is not aware of it as an issue on Ravs.

Welcome to the club Stu.

It is very common on these 4.3s and lots of us have had them done under warranty. Where in the UK are you? (there is always someone with good contacts for work).

I take it you've already had the work done but some items have extended warranties so please speak to us first.

Regards

Surely Big Stu has some sort of retrospective redress on Toyota? 22k on a set of discs is laughable. I too was not aware of ant Rav disc problem, as only joined you guys in September. I should know better, having had two sets under warranty on my 2006 Avensis previously.

Thanks chaps......4warned is 4armed.

Big Kev.

I am getting a bit fed up with Toyota to be honest, new discs at 23000, I have been told my cab will need new discs for its next MOT approx 175000mls  I am starting to dread the expiry of my manufacturers warranty my car will have only done 15000mls so its looking like a lot of these faults will occur when i have no cover..Incidently My brother bought my 4.2 (now 7yrs old) other than a replacement Battery its been faultless..Stew

Hi Stu and welcome also ,

My previous toyota celica had 29k on and was 3 months of warranty to run and they replaced front discs because they where warped FOC but charged £55 for new pads as they were down a little . Maybe different dealers have different policys .

Mick

Retrospective warranty claims are very hard to persue, it is much easier before you've parted with the cash. For anyone with the confidence to have a bash, it really isn't a bad job and there is some scope to save a load of dosh!!!

haha

I'm still waiting for the enquiry over my discs which lasted less than 2000 miles before they had to be skimmed. Its not the discs but the pad material and caliper action from my experience. (note to self...must avoid emergency stops from 100mph so regularly)

I had all 4 discs replaced on my 2005 RAV just last month or so due to brake judder. The dealer had to get the ok from Toyota to do it under warranty, so I would have expected you to get that done FOC as well!

I also had to pay for new pads all round myself, but they were due for replacement anyway in fact so no quarrels on that

My pads warped too, after around 30k miles. The dealer was going to replace them under warranty but Toyota had run out (!), so they skimmed them instead and fitted new pads. Two things occur:

1. The discs don't seem to be evenly swept (circular bands of corrosion are evident); one theory is that this leads to local overheating and hence warping.

2. The discs look grubby. Discs on other cars are nice and shiny; mine look as though some sort of gunge has been deposited on them.

The performance of the brakes has never been particularly good and is now really quite poor. I have to think ahead and start braking well before other cars do. The difference is most noticeable when I have been driving my husband's car (Mercedes) or indeed any other car such as a hire car.

I wonder whether the problem is with poor quality steel in the discs or strange composition of the pads or indeed the caliper action. Whatever it is, I am not impressed - the technology has been around for so long that there is no excuse for not getting it right. It's a pity there are no after market discs and pad sets available (although it should not be necessary to go to such lengths).

There are after market discs and pads around - EBC do "Green Stuff" certainly for the 4.1 RAV. I'd have thought that they will be available for later models. The discs are generally discs - and not a lot of difference between them/manufacturers. The pads will make a difference and certainly if the pad is not contacting on the whole of its surface then the braking will be affected. Caliper action should be checked as well.

I use my 2 RAVs pretty ferociously - 1 with racing brakes and 1 with standard brakes. I don't get problems with disc warp - its the transfer of pad material onto the disc that I have problems with in the past; and sticking calipers.

the rear calipers of my Previa were sticking and the mess they made of the discs was unreal.
