Timing Belt Advice Needed

I have a 1.8 SE W reg (2000) Avensis, done 64K miles and need to get the timing belt changed. My question is what other bits need to be replaced at the same time? Some people have said the tensioner and also the water pump ( whilst its all opened up ). Also some people sell a timing belt kit - what's contained in the Kit normally?

Thanks in advance ;)

A timing belt kit usually includes a new belt, tensioner pulley and in some cases new pulley retaining bolts. On engines were the water pump is timing belt driven it is prudent to change the water pump whilst your down in there as the additional labour charges should be minimal. Additionally some garages will not give a warranty unless the pulley and pump are replaced. Does no harm to replace the auxiliary belt at the same time.

If you have a look through the link below you find likely costs but it's always wise to check Toyata prices for comparison first.:)

I have recently purchased a Y reg 1.6 Avensis and the garage owner told me that it was fitted with a timing chain rather than a belt and that this needn't be changed. Is there a way I can check whether this is the case?

Pop the bonnet,or you could look at the Badge on the wing if its there........ look at the rocker cover large BLACK PLASTIC cover, and it says VVTi on it - thats the chain driven engine.

Missing cover ????? then its more than likely belt driven.

If you have plastic covers on the o/s of the engine, then it will be belt :D otherwise it would leak oil :D

Many Thanks for your help.
