T Spirit Climate Control

I've just bought a 13 month old Auris.

When I press the 'Auto' button on the climate control, this switches on automatic control as I'd expect but the 'A/C' control also lights up. Is this normal?

This is the third car I've owned with climate control and none of the others switched air con on simultaneously with auto control. In warm weather A/C would certainly come on and go off to keep the car at the set temperature but it was never permanently on. I know we've had some mild weather on the east coast of Scotland this week but not mild enough to be running A/C!

It is not Toyota specific. I had other cars with exactly the same setup :)

You can change those settings with computer diagnostic device in service.

I don't actually like that auto-mode. Just driving with auto-mode off all the time. I don't get what's so cool about air blowing on full power at first. I keep fan speed at 2-3 bars and let my car warm up or cool down without a rush. It may take a bit more time on slower fan speeds, but at least I can hear things. And on slower speed the ventilation isn't blowing tons of cold air when it's winter time and I've just started the car and it's cold. Very uncomfortable when it's cold and cold air blowing on hands and everywhere in the cabin.

My temperature is set to 20-24. It's 23-24 during winter time, but as the car gets warmer I lower the temperature to 22 or even to 20 degrees as it may get pretty warm inside. On summer I keep my temp at 22-23 depending on how cold it is and is it rainy or sunny outside.

Sorry for off-topic

Best regards, Alex

Alex but when the engine starts and auto mode is on no air is blowing, it starts blowing slowly as engine tempreture goes up. I don't know why but it blows always at legs at my car so I there is no air blowing in face or hands

Also don't like when a/c is on always after pushing auto - i hardly use a/c so it's annoying

Auto Climate , needs the A/C function to carry out its work most efficiently ( I mean efficiently to heat/cool the cabin, not efficiently for fuel!!!)

The Auto function blowing to the feet, happens when the cabin temperature is lower than the setting you selected, and the reason for this is that is is quicker and more efficient to blow hot air to the lower side in order to get the cabin up to temperature quickly.

If you blow hot air to the top of the cabin you will loose that heat through contact with the cold windows.

That is the reason it blows always at the legs as you mention... efficiency

If you have a hot cabin and you select a lower temperature you will get air blowing in your face when you select auto Climate.

I have set up mine to Auto Non-AC and I leave it there at 20.5deg. Only use AC in summer or if there is a lot of humidity/condensation in the cabin...

Thanks for all the replies.

I agree that 'efficient' climate control necessitates use of a/c, particularly in damp weather when dehumidification is required. Of course fuel consumption suffers which is why I started this thread.

Hmm, 'It is normal on most modern cars'. Our other car is a Honda Civic and a/c only cuts in when in auto mode when we have hot weather - so it's not on very often in Scotland! ;) Ditto my previous car so it looks as though they are the odd ones out and Auris climate control behaviour is normal. I'll have to remember to keep switching off a/c and improve my fuel consumption especially since we're to be faced with fuel increases in the UK.

At the moment I'm getting 34.5 mpg, which seems very low for a 1.6 given the quoted combined figure is around 40 mpg.
