Do Garages Charge Extra For Ecu Software Update?

Hi all,

I've just been to my local dealer and found out that I need new glow plugs and an ECU software update. They wanted £324 for the work, which I found excessive. ( Can get NGK glow plugs @ £40 for 4 on eBay ). Didn't have time for them to break down the work but thought I'd ask here: are software updates chargable and if so roughly how much?

Hello, I had my ECU update done FOC a few months ago but my car was still in warranty at two and a half years old. I found out about the update on here so I went to the Toyota dealership and they just said book it in and we will do it free. They also did a full safety inspection/report and even washed the car as well so full marks to them. If the ECU update is by way of a recall from Toyota I see no reason why they would charge you for that .... the glow plugs do seem a bit expensive fitted at the dealers but then again the price may be fixed by Toyota UK.

I haad my ECU flashed about a year ago. Reported lumpy acceleration when cold when it went in for a service. they initially said £30+vat but when I pointed out the car was under warranty it became f.o.c.

fixed the problem as well!

Thanks for the replies. My car is out of warranty (53 plate D4D) so I guess I would be charged.
