1989 2.4 Hilux - Loss Of Power

Just wanted some advice. Noticed more black smoke when accelerating and loss of power (big time) when the pick-up is loaded or even when it's empty particularly going uphill.

Is it worth getting a compression test done and would most garages be able to do this??

Thanks in advance for any advice

Not being an expert on the older models I assume it is a diesel engine. If that is the case then black smoke is either due to excess fuel or too little air. Poor compression usually shows itself by white smoke with a distinctive diesel odour especially when starting from cold.

When was the air filter last changed??:)

Yep - it is a diesel. I changed the oil and oil filter about 4 months ago but didn't change the filter as its one of those special clean it yourself K & N performance filters. I just got someone to blow it out with an air compressor. Would it be a good idea to just take it off completely and see how it goes. I'm feeling happier that black smoke isn't necessarily indicative of compression problems. It does actually drive really well and always starts - just struggles when gong uphill or if trying to tow something. It's just failed the MOT but only one a couple of small welds required on the sills (expected) thing is I don't want to pay for welding if the engine is going to fall to bits!!!

Also wondering if it needs new injectors????

Thanks again
