Nope, you're not wrong there. And do appreciate that when you're in a pickle you'd love to have everything possible to get you out, but have you noticed since getting a prius that you tend to start slowing for things much much earlier, trying to look at head far earlier, regenerate more than brake etc etc.

In my previous cars, I'd have loved some extra anchor, in the prius I'm miffed if I use the real brakes.

I agree entirely  , to get the best from the Prius you have to drive with considerable anticipation of the road ahead. And gentle use of the controls in normal everyday driving has certainly helped during this recent spell of weather.

I would go as far as to say, if you could subtract the five minutes (whatever) warm up period, when I'm busy clearing windows etc., I think my fuel economy has improved ever so slightly because in these conditions I'm driving more gently.

(Until yesterday, when I was taxi-ing the lad and my wife, here, there and everywhere and they both happened to be at opposite end of town at the same time and needed picking up NOW! )

As mentioned, I don't think they're a bad idea as such, just the cost, and inconvenience of changing them for me outweighs their usefulness, but that's a very personal judgement.

I rotated the wheels on my old RAV last year and the biggest problem was keeping an eye on the lad while I had the car jacked up. Apart from that it was a pleasent half hour in the fresh air. :D

The cost (and the storage) is an issue .......but for that little extra peace of mind I personally think it is worth considering. Maybe the fact that I had two 4x4's before the Prius is clouding my judgement towards extra traction if at all available.

FWIW, on stock 17" tyres, had no trouble at all driving up an icey hill that other cars were needing to be pushed up. Thought I was in something with 4WD it surprised me that much.

Very true! In fact as mentioned in any other thread the only time my Prius stopped was when the snow was just to deep for it! :o :toast:

When it was blazing a trail down country lanes, fresh with virgin snow, I could not praise it high enough, especially like you say on 17" wheels and low profile tyres! But again at the back of my mind I keep thinking it might be just that little bit better on proper winter tyres. ;)

Oh, and for what it's worth, all RWD cars I've had have been shocking in snow compared to FWD.... the video was of two RWD cars, don't be surprised if even with the wrong tyres, your FWD car beats the pants off them.

When I was a lad, I had some horrible journey's to work over snow cover roads in my old Capri.

Spent most of the time looking out of the side windows!

Did anyone try any autosocks?

http://www.autosock.co.uk/

My Prius handled the ice and snow in our area with ease.

Was thinking of getting some for the Yaris which wasn't so happy.

Not personally, but I noticed the BMW M3 around corner invested in a set after a few days of going absolutely nowhere and afterwards finally managed to get off the estate.
