hi there....i have a 2002 t sport, driving the car for a while sometimes even 5 minutes the P/S light appears and the steering gets heavy(loose the power steering) now the weird part is when you open/close the door then the light turns off and it drives normal for a short while then again the light appears????

Had a quick look at the EMPS relay under bonnet fuse box, not sure how to check if its okay.....

Hope u guys can point me in the right direction....thanx

No idea what it could be, try resetting the ecu, mine used to do this on a long straight drive when i tapped the brake lights on it used to go off. Not happened in a long time to me. Remove negative Battery terminal for around a minute and put it back. See fi anything changes.

Have you checked the fluid level?

I had a MG ZR do somthing similar, lost P/S everytime i drove and it came back when i stopped. It turned out to be a split P/S fluid pipe.

they're electric on the t sport, used to do the same on my mr2 it was a sticking relay

As above - the "power steering" uses an electric motor on the top of the steering column to provide the power assistance (EPS).

Quite possible to have a loose relay or failing relay but it will normally throw up a fault code and the VSC light will come on.

Have you had the wheel alignment done recently or is the steering wheel out of alignment ?

If so, the Steering Angle sensor/ Zero Point Calibration point may need to be set up.

feels like the alignment is out, planning to get it done from my local garage but bit vary due to the fact its an electric power steering....how do i calibrate the steering??

Re-calibrating the Steering Angle Sensor (if it is the problem) is a job best left to the Main Dealer, as they do it with the MasterTech Scan Tool.

Would have the alignment done first, followed by an ECU reset as suggested above and see if it cures the problem.

I did reset the ecu, it didnt make any difference

Ive had it diagnosed, fault code c133 open circuit in left front wheel speed sensor, also now its showing 3 lights abs, vsc, trc.

The mechanic told me to replace the abs sensor to eliminate 1st before doing anything else also told me the p/s is all connected to abs....

so i replaced the abs sensor and guess wot nothings changed and the fault code c133 is still showing, the mechanic has told me to leave the car with him so i can check the wiring ecu...... ?????

No need to replace all the speed sensors as the fault code is specific to individual parts of the system.

Did you clear the ECU codes after replacing the sensor ?

yes he did try to clear the code but it was still showing, therefore he said it could be an electrical fault in the wiring or ecu???

Hi guys so basically the t sport uses a electric powersteering?

Hi,

You have just replied to an 11 year old thread....   the standard uk 2006 Corolla uses electric steering, so assume your model will have it too.

Easy enough to spot in the engine bay if you have fluid driven power steering, just look for the extra pump wheel on the fan belt, reservoir and pipe work to the steering rack.
