Drivers Window Mechanism

hi folks

for a few weeks now ive noticed that my drivers side window is going down slower & slower, just taken door panel off and re plugged in door switches to look in door cavity to see what happens.......

when window is 2thrd's of way down,it appears that glass has moved backwards in the guides / runners by about 10-12mm

i can actually pull the glass forward back into the guide through the openeings

glass actually comes clean out of front guide

it seems as though either the guides / runners have opened wider,or the window mechansim is just weakened through use? (find this hard to believe though). :o

months ago i did find that front guide / runner had no rubber sleeving in it ,so i got some garden hose, cut it to reqd length, slit it all way along and masticed it into front runner ( this was to stop glass rattling when it was in down position)..it worked a treat..no more rattles. :)

would the 'fix' i did have any bearing on window moving?

as i stand now,my window cant be opened,as it comes out of front runner all the time now :(

Hi Rambler

Its hard to say without seeing it but usually the runners are fixed to the door with metal brackets and these have elongated holes. If you slacken the bolts you should be able to move the runners in closer together.

hi anch's

well i finish work early on thurs(tomorow),so as i will have more daylight, will have another look.

i did try this evening with a head torch, but just cant see enough,i found a thread you and me contributed to a few months back though.

you posted a 4-5 page pdf re full door breakdown....very handy indeed, marvelous

so will attempt tomorow afternoon (if its not raining),have half an incling that glass fixing bolts to mechanism may be loose....???

do you reckon the mod i did with 'slit garden hose' may have caused it?....it stopped the glass rattling

only trouble is hose is well and truly siliconed into runner now..but will look for those adjusting bolts you mention

I don't really know if it caused it without looking. I suppose if it caused excessive pressure on the runners, it could have forced it apart. Use wifey's make up mirror to have a look inside the door but be warned they get a bit tetchy if you leave it in there!

hi again anch's

i looked at the window again earlier, the runners bolts are fixed ,cant be moved,i can with reasonable force though pull the rear runner 'closer' towards front runner .

but have now removed the garden hose mod i did months ago.

just in case glass was 'dragging' on it,but i have now stuck some 'duck' tape to the edge of the runner, again this seems to have stopped the glass rattling against its runner.

so glass now 'rattles' against duck tape rather than metal....thus cant hear it anymore :)

put door panel back on,...but motor is seriously struggling to pull glass down after about 4 inches still, you can really hear motor straining.

if i release window switch and do it in 'stages'..it copes..just,and each time the glass stops going down it kind of slowly springs up and forward 10mm or so,almost as though the mechansim is releasing itself from the strain.

i thnk mechanism may be warped ,bent, or just weakened through use.....possibly :(

so as you say maybe the runners have 'spread' slightly,or too close together.

do you reckon the motor could 'burn out',i have had a new 740amp Battery fitted now ,so plenty of power even with engine running

ill give it another look on saturday, between the showers

The Battery won't make any difference.

Try squirting some Mr Sheen or similar silicone polish down each of the runners when the window is at the bottom. Then run it up and down a few times. The inserts should be faced with felt which is low friction but eventually it wears off to reveal the rubber backing. That can be very sticky and grab hold of the glass. Silicone will test the theory!

Hi Anchorman,

You probably have a far better solution to the make-up mirror problem than mine, but I dismantled an old HDD and use the disk itself as a mirror in these situations. The advantages are that the surface on the disk is very reflective and VERY, VERY hard and non scratch, if you drop it it won't break and you can easily clean it without damaging the surface. I have a small supply of them if anyone wants one. Just PM

The magnets from the HDD's are very useful as well. I reckon if you had about four of them on a crane you could pick up a RAV and if you used five you could pick up an average handbag ;) ...........runs for cover :!Removed!:

A couple of other things to try/check are to slacken the window track bolts 1-2turns. If your window runs up/down ok nip them up 1/4turn and repeat again. This should allow the glass to shift the track while travelling and should help it re-align the glass without it binding in the door frame. Keep doing this till bolts are tightened. As Anchorman suggested use some silicon spray on the track and if its cable operated, sometimes there is a wee gap at the ends. Try and squirt some WD40/Silicon in to this also.

Another thing to look at are the window rubbers, just in case they are moving and coming adrift from the door frame, jamming the glass?

hi folks

done what anchorman suggested, took door panel off, sprayed some silicone aerosil down both glass rubbers....started engine.

operated door window button 'up and down' a dozen times....glass now moves free and easily....almost like new ! ! :D :D :D :D :D

anchorman....you truly are a legend once again :thumbsup::thumbsup:

oilkid, thanks for your input to

cheers

Blimey O'Riley Rambs, you're a bit thorough! I meant just squirt it down the side from the top. Still it had the right affect, your back in action.

Cheers
