Toyota Recall In North America

In case you hadn't heard to the recent recall in the US. This involved 'unintended acceleration' and floormats, with a recent death reported and 3.8 million cars recalled:

Generation II Prius's are included in the recall. Our driver footwells are on the opposite side to theirs so this 'problem' may not affect us.

Still, no fear! There is a thread on Priuschat which explains how to get out of trouble should it happen to you. I'm going to give the full link here, so if it gets changed to a 'sticky' (as requested by the author), you should still be able to search on the words to find it:

http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-prius-main-forum/72613-should-there-sticky-thread-what-do-in-case-sudden-acceleration.html

The sixth posted reply has a link to a few video'd solutions which you might interesting. Link here.

Bottom line is that your brake pedal will always be able to overcome whatever your accelerator pedal is doing! My main message is to be skeptical of potential 'untruths' being circulated out there about Priuss, e.g. about brakes failing to respond and being unable to shift to neutral, etc.

The accelerator pedal on a UK Gen 2 is a different design, it has a metal rod where as the US version is plastic.

It's probably a good idea not to have anything that can move in the drivers foot well and potentially interact with the pedal in unexpected ways - in my case long ago in another car it was a can of de-icer that got stuck under the brake pedal.

Looking at my GenII accelerator pedal there's loads of space between the pedal and where the oem mat ends due to the shape of the mat.

Plus the driver mat is held in position by a couple of pegs on the seat end.

Strange that the US market should have a different type pedal rather than reverse the mould used to make the rhd cars which seems a fairly easy thing to do.

Erm, I can't see how that would help as the accelerator and brake pedals aren't swapped around between LHD and RHD cars.
