hello people

i have a 'Ring 75' inverter, basicly it plugs into cig lighter socket and produces 240v.

my queery is,will it power a small travel kettle...or come to that,a normal kettle for a cuppa in the car !

anybody tried this?....

looked at Halfords 12'24v car kettles but boiling time is almost 20mins ! !

Hi Rambler,

In the end it's all down to watts! Even a travel kettle is 1000w and your alternator is maybe 1500w BUT the cigar lighter that you plug the inverter into is only suitable to supply about 60w. Even if your inverter was big enough to power a kettle ( fairly unlikely ), the car wiring, fuses and sockets are not meant to cope with that amount of power. Personally, I wouldn't even try it. For emergency ( and picnic ) use, I have a meths powered Trangia cooker that is about 200mm diameter x 90 mm high and contains it's own kettle. Boils in 4 or 5 minutes and works really well even in a gale. I suppose that if thinks were really desperate I could drink the meths - but I haven't been tempted yet! ;)

What about taking a flask of boiling water, then just bring it back to the boil using a 12v kettle, Alternately spend some money + stop at a little chef :lol::lol:

Where are you going with your winch + brewing facilities  Could this be the first Rav to reach the North Pole.. :toast::toast::yahoo:

Hi Rambler,

some second thoughts...... your inverter only produces 75w so it would be a bit small for a kettle anyway. Just spent about 10 minutes looking at your photos of Lakes - fantastic! Newlands Valley was my introduction to the Lakes on a school trip in 1961. It and Borrowdale are still favourites. Hey! it's stopped raining here - I'm off for a walk before it starts again or gets dark.

hi chris

well as you mention the photos,i am currently having two of the 'views' enlarged to 1000x700mm by a company called 'pics2posters'.

they reckon they can enlarge them to almost any size i request and keep same quality, given that they have 3 meter wide printers, they could be HUGE prints if i want.

only cost £15 each plus post

the originals are 10 mp so plenty of detail

i holiday in lakes all the time, soooooo beautiful,a real change from essex
