6 Speed Gearbox For A 4.1 Rav?

Well the inevitable has happened.... naw - it hasn't actually. The racing RAV gearbox is intact and working well.

The backup RAV4 with 3sgte engine developed a fault and the speedo drive ring in the gearbox has detached from its position. We reckon the box itself is showing some sloppy movement and with the extra power has damaged the speedo drive. rather than split the box, I'm looking for a RAV gearbox to just replace the whole thing.... and I rather fancy a 6 speed box. Any mechanical knowledgeable folk out there who might have an idea of whether the 6 speed box will fit in with the 3sgte engine and the remianing 4.1 running gear?

Otherwise if you know anyone wanting rid of a gearbox/ RAV 4.1, then I'm interested.

You of all people should know how dangerous and possibly unreliable it is to add more of anything..........and you'll need to increase your cog insurance cover! Have you considered that? :P

Got some exploded pictures of the dieselly 6 speed if you want(?), but no useful dimension as far as I can see.

SHCM as always is correct, adding a 6 speed gearbox would give you a ratio of 2 gears per door, this is why MR T do not make a 4.3 in a 3dr as it just won't work, your hinge insurance together with cog insurance would be to much of a liability for any insurance to underwrite have you considered adding 2 more rear doors + a sunroof this would reduce the ratio to an almost perfect 1 cog per door, which is a much better balance..Stew

aye - funny one - I already have 2 sunroofs fitted - fitting another would convert it to an open top bucket and Skoda already invented them 30 years ago.

Hadn't thought through the complexities of 6 gears needing a slow diesel engine to drive it so the box might not be able to take any more than 55bhp ?

And how on earth do you guys with so many hinges and locks get away with 6 multiple cog gears?? Or is it down to the restrained engine power?

yes ---- I admit it. I have ownership of a 3 door diesel landrover which has been away in a garage in Perthshire getting a replacement diesel engine - but it has been away for 17 months. I also now have use of 3 - yes THREE - Ford transit Diesels all of which are 3.5 ton and of varying engine power - from 3.5bhp up to the dizzy levels of 85 Newtons, whatever that is. Thank goodness they only have 2 doors cos 5 doors would be an effort too far.

Even my Previa, poorly looked after by the previous (previas) owner who should be shot with a diesel powered shotgun, has only 2 doors at the front; 1 sliding door; and 1 rear door = 4 doors by my count and I've been round it 8 times. The engine is distinctly petrol and at 2440cc, is awaiting a supercharger and I'm slowly replacing most of it to be able to enjoy what I believe is the most comfortable car ever built. The car is automatic and has no DMF.

In your favour, I now own, via the charity, a 6 cylinder IVECO 50kva diesel generator which appears to only have 2 doors - both of which lead to the electrical boxes.

We even own 4 portacabins and none of them have any more than 3 doors. Thankfully i have been able to purchais low cost hinge insurance en bloc, so to speak.

Most disappoin ted by the failure of a low (80,000 mile) gearbox from the younger RAV4, but in thinking things thru, I should keep to the original spec box and not tempt fate with the 6 cog box. As schm said, the cog insurance is a cog too far.
