Door Open Icon On Dash

I have 2004 avensis, my door open icon is on and all the doors are closed properly. i can't lock the car with remote as the car thinks a door is open.

also a 7.5amp fuse that operates the interior lights ,(courtsey, visor, boot etc.) keeps blowing. this fuse is located under the steering wheel. i'm guessing the two probs are connected? i had the pleasure of having my car broken into before and the drivers window was shattered and i'm thinking some glass has got into the wiring and is shorting the wiring of the courtesy light on the drivers side and causing this prob. has anyone any ideas please.. due into garage on friday and i'm thinking the mechanic may "take his time" tracing my prob ... any help much appreciated.. ie how to take panel off the door etc.

Have you tried removing the interior and boot light bulbs to see if the car locks??:)

Removing bulbs i doubt would cure, the system will still register door open and NO C/LOCKING from hand blip available.

From what you have said, i would be looking at the wiring behind the drivers door panel, you mentioned being broken into, what else did they nick or break, might be something else that was disturbed giving you your problems.

Check you hand book : 7.5a that keeps blowing !!!!!!

All the items operated by this fuse need checking ........

You need to think about unplugging 1 item at a time to see if the fuse still blows, hope you have plenty of fuses.....

Theres another way, bit more setting up, thats to rig up a bulb in the place of the fuse, so you aint continually replacing fuses while you locate the fault.

thanks i'd like to know how to take the panel off the drivers door if ya don't mind. i wouldn't have the knokledge of how to unplug each light etc. from the fuse .. sort of just wanna locate the prob so i can say "there ya go mr. mechanic i'll see ya in hour" !!

I'm assuming your interior light is also on when the "door open" light is on? Your fuse is a "live" circuit and is related to the courtesy light - so it's related to the car knowing whether a door is open or not.

As far as I know the door switches are the standard push type ones located in the door aperture, and not related to anything actually inside the door skin itself. Firstly check that all the door switches appear ok and don't have the end broken off or similar. Press each one in turn and see if it puts your light out. Even have 3 assistants help to press all 4 door switches at the same time and see if the light goes out. Failing that then remove each switch and check that the wiring isn't earthing to the car body. I'm not sure about the boot set up tho - you'll need to figure out how that one works and either disconnect it, or perhaps permanently earth it. If none of that gives you any clue then I'm afraid you'll need to follow all the wiring until you find the short circuit. Try to think logically first. ie where the wires are under stress on could have been hit/bent etc - in the boot, or where a bicycle wheel hits the door aperture, etc etc.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mate here is a diagram of the interior light wiring. post-74463-1259756653_thumb.jpg it may help you or the mechanic. By the way the door switches just act as an earth when the door is opened.

Regards Pete.

Open each door individually and press the little black stub that tells the car whether the door is shut or not, sometimes they become loose and break up inside. If that helps find the problem and which sensor it is then unscrew it and see if its just come out of its holder or whether it needs a new one.

thanks mate, but its actually the door open icon on the dash thats on not the actual light that lights when ya open a door , i think the prob is in the driver door, under the skin where some glass prob got into the wiring from a break in last year. just need to know how to pull off the skin?? is it just literaaly pull it off some clips??? thanks for your reply

The interior light can be off and the dash warning light will still come on if there is a fault my friends, did the t'leafs disturb any other items ???, any chance you can get it sorted via your insurance with the break in ??

break in happened a year ago .. i think some shattered glass that wasn't hoovered out properly has chewed some wires inside the door skin.

insurance did cover the window and kink in the door , dont think they'll pay up for this but i'll give it a go ... can only say no i suppose

ta 4 reply
