Toyota Starlet 1998

Hi everyone, having some trouble with my toyota starlet. Seems to lose power, when accelerating for a long period of time. Noticed this the other day, when I was in the outside lane overtaking a bus, on a slight hill. As i was driving past, at 70mph, the car started to slow done, and although my foot was flat done on the accelerator, i could feel the engine struggling. I then pulled over, to discover smoke coming from the bonnet. The smoke appeared to be coming from the left hand side of the engine, near the Battery. I have no idea what this could be, coolant level appears to be fine, oil level is fine. (spark plugs have also been replaced) any suggestions would be appreciated

Ermmm.... that leaves 2 other area's for concern........

On the left is the gear box.... slowing down you say, has the gear box got oil in it ??? , smoke - may be this was clutch dust/fumes rising from a hot clutch ???

Obviously i cant see,............. when driving the car slowed, did the rev's increase ????

Did the smoke have an odour to it ??????????

Thanks for the reply, I had a look under the car, to find that the gearbox might have a leak, as it oily. The revs remained the same, although there was a very strange odour coming out the bonnet, smelt like burning plastic. How easy is it to change the gear box oil? Is there gear box dipstick in the engine?
