High Revs When Driving

I have recently bought an Avensis 2003 (old model). Its 1.6 petrol.

When driving at 60 mph its showing over 300 rpm. Is this normal? My old ford focus (1.6) would have a lower rpm, but it was a lighter car overall.

Shoud I bring it back to be looked over? What else should I keep an eye out for?

Is this a wind-up? Firstly, I presume you mean 3,000RPM and not 300RPM as it wouldn't even tick-over at 300RPM. You do realise that different cars have different engines that run optimally at different RPM's and gearboxes that are suited to that particular car? My 2.0 Avensis runs at 3,000RPM at 70MPH but that doesn't mean that it's more or less economical than a similar car that runs at 2500RPM or 3500RPM at the same speed.

I agree with Parva. My 1998 1.8 lean burn also shows 3000rpm at 70mph. I had a 1993 Cavalier 1.8LS, and that had higher gearing. It was geared at 2800rpm at 70mph. That car is lighter than the Avensis, but the Avensis has less drag. The Avensis has better economy than the Cavalier, in my experience. And it is more quiet too.

The 1.6 vvti has less torque and need more revs. It is geared at 20mph per 1000rpm. That means it will be showing 3500rpm @ 70mph. That's the same as the Corolla and Auris with similar 1.6 engine and 5 speed gear box.

If Brannie wants a more relaxing drive, he need to buy the larger engine versions which have the torque to cope. Also I would have tried to get a test drive of the car on fast roads, to test the cruising for noise and the revs. Try a Renault Clio which is terrible motorway car. That car needs a 6th gear or a longer 5th. Yet that car is fine in town.
