Rav4 '56 2.2d4d - Tuning Box Issues

Guys, I have just bought a tuning box (abeit, off ebay) for my 56 Rav4 2.2D4D

Internally it looks identical the pictures posted from Haylands links.

I've been tinkering with the jumper positions a little. At the moment, the blue jumper is one position from the right, with the red jumper two clear spaces to the left. In this setting, I can barely notice a difference in performance with the box on or off.

I have tried moving the red jumper closer to the blue - It works until you really start to open it up, then (quite scary the first time) goes into limp mode.

I also tried moving the blue jumper to the furthest right postion, and then gradually moved the red jumper up towards that - I suspect that this would be the ideal postion of the blue jumper - the acceleration (10-50) was significantly improved, but again once on the open road, stretching out the gears, it goes into limp mode.

My questions;

The box I have seems to be the standard design - does anyone have the instructions for set up or is there anything else I can do to stop it going into limp mode?

Has anyone experimented with moving the blue jumper to the left? i.e. closer to the red, but in the opposite direction?

Finally, I noticed that a few people have said that the mod seems to get 'better and better' Is this to suggest that the engine management adapts (in a positve way) or, is what you get when you plug it in, what you get and full stop?

thanks, Svennard :(

Hi Svennard+ welcome, I would very much like to help with your problem, however I have no Idea how these things work, I had mine supplied + fitted by Lindop Toyota It worked straight away I have had it 2 years + so far no problems, I believe it has these jumpers inside but although curious I have resisted the temptation to open my box + play around with whatevers inside(await smutty coments) you may actually get more advice on the Auris section as the guys on there are more into performance than most on here..Good luck mate..Stew

Stew, thanks for the advice. To be fair, I'm really impressed with the RAV4: Had loads of cars over the years (which works out to pretty much one for every year of my driving life - which is 20 years now..)

That includes, VW's, Subaru's and a Merc (but also some not so nice ones too) - I've got to say that pound for pound, this is probably the best motor I've had yet for all round balance (as in cost, performance, quality etc) BUT, I had the opportunity to pick up a tuning box for a really good price, so I thought I'd give it a go - Now I have it, I want to get the best out of it, of course..! I'll take your advice and drop in on The Auris section and see what they've got to say. Cheers, Svennard

I THINK I'VE RESOLVED THE MYSTERY OF THE TUNING BOX JUMPERS!!

I think I've got a result; I did some 'red eye' research in the early hours a few days ago and found (I believe) the answer to what the jumper settings control - There are three rows of nine pins - Apparently the top (blue) jumper is the rev range adjuster and (bottom) red jumper is the amount of power applied. The red is straight forward, but the blue determines the range over which the power is distributed - the further to the right, the wider, and higher up the rev range the power is fed.

As my last post, I wasn't getting much success with the blue jumper set to the right of the red one. (couldn't get the settings above pin 5-6 without limp mode being activated), so I decided to reverse the jumpers i.e. I moved the blue jumper to the furthest left position and moved the red to the furthest position right. (In theory, that shoudl be more power, but over a narrow power band) - Tested - no improvement, but no limp mode this time...

I then gradually moved the blue jumper across to the right, testing everytime over the same stretch of road - After several blue jumper moves, I could start to see an improvement.

The last change I made was to put the blue jumper on pin 7, with the red jumper still on pin 9 - YES - this seemed to make a massive difference by moving blue from 6-7. Over a 1/4 mile stretch I could get up to 10mph faster, with the signficantly improved acceleration. However, when I really dragged out third gear, it went into limp mode, but not until around 4700revs. However, that's pretty much on the limiter and out of the peak pulling range anyway.

Just to satisfy myself I then moved the blue jumper to pin 8, and kept the red on pin 9 (the highest possible setting) - The car seemed even quicker, but just as I was about to 'take off', the limp mode activated earlier at approx 3800 revs. ahh..never mind.

I've reverted to blue on 7, red on 9 as I don't think I'll be reving over 4700 during my 'normal' driving. I'll leave it here and see how things work out. I did get chance to run up the motorway before and after - showing about 3-4mpg improvement over the same stretch of road.

It looks like the car can handle the max power setting, but doesn't like all that power being fed in too far up the rev range.

I hope this helps some of you out there, still frustrated with their tuning box. It seems to work for me. :D
