Help With Tuning Box Jumper Settings For 2.2 Rav4

Guys, I originally posted this on the RAV forum, but I was advised that you chaps may be better placed to help;

I have just bought a tuning box for my 56 Rav4 2.2D4D

Internally it looks identical the pictures posted from Haylands links. - i.e. a circuit board with two lines of jumpers at the bottom - with blue and red jumpers on them.

I've been tinkering with the jumper positions a little. At the moment, the blue jumper is one position from the right, with the red jumper two clear spaces to the left. In this setting, I can barely notice a difference in performance with the box on or off.

I have tried moving the red jumper closer to the blue - It works until I stretch the gear out, then (quite scarily the first time) it goes into limp mode.

I have also tried moving the blue jumper to the furthest right postion, and then gradually moving the red jumper up towards it - I suspect that this would be the ideal postion of the blue jumper - the acceleration (10-50) seemed significantly sharper but again, once on the open road, stretching out the gears, it goes into limp mode.

My questions;

- Internally, the box I have seems to be the standard design, judging by the images posted on the site - does anyone have instructions or a guide for the optimum set up?

- Has anyone experimented with moving the blue jumper to the left? i.e. closer to the red, but in the opposite direction?

- Does anyone know what the blue / red jumpers represent? - Is one power and one economy?

- Finally, I noticed that a few people have said that their tuning box mod seems to get 'better and better' Is this to suggest that the engine management adapts (in a positve way) or, is what you get when you plug it in, what you get and full stop?

I've found myself in that frustrating place where having bought the box, I feel a little disapointed with it and want to at least feel happy that I've explored every jumper combination to get the best out of it.

thanks, Svennard :(

I THINK I'VE RESOLVED THE MYSTERY OF THE TUNING BOX JUMPERS!!

I think I've got a result; I did some research in the early hours this morning and found the answer to what the jumper settings control - There are three rows of nine pins - I have determined that the top (blue) jumper is the rev range adjuster and (bottom) red jumper is the amount of power applied. The red is straight forward, but the blue determines the range over which the power is distributed - the further to the right, the wider, and higher up the rev range the power is fed.

As my last post, I wasn't getting much success with the blue jumper set to the right of the red one. (couldn't get the settings above pin 5-6 without limp mode being activated), so I decided the reverse the jumpers i.e. I moved the blue jumper to the furthest left position and moved the red to the furthest position right. (In theory, full power, but over a narrow power band) - Tested - no improvement, but no limp mode.

I then gradually moved the blue jumper across to the right, testing everytime over the same stretch of road - After several blue jumper moves, I could start to see an improvement.

The last change I made was to put the blue jumper on pin 7, with the red jumper still on pin 9 - WOW a massive difference by moving blue from 6-7. Over a 1/4 mile stretch I could get up to 10mph faster, with the signficantly improved acceleration. However, when I really dragged out third gear, it went into limp mode, but not until around 4700revs. That's pretty much on the limiter and out of the peak pulling range anyway.

Just to satisfy myself I then moved the blue jumper to pin 8, and kept red on pin 9 (the highest possible setting) - The car seemed even quicker, but just as I was about to 'take off', the limp mode activated earlier at approx 3800 revs. ahh..never mind.

I've reverted to blue on 7, red on 9 as I don't think I'll be needing to rev over 4700 with the addtional power and torque. I'll leave it here and see how things work out. I did get chance to run up the motorway before and after - showing about 3-4mpg improvement over the same stretch of road.

It looks like the car can handle the max power setting, but doesn't like all that power being fed in too far up the rev range.

I hope this helps some of you out there, still frustrated with their tuning box. :)

Hi

This is my post for fitting a tuning box. And to-date I still love the extra oomph.

When I spoke to the seller and asked about the jumpers, he said the more you move the red jumper closer to the blue the more power you get. He didn't say anything about moving the blue jumper. At present I haven't move any of them because i'm more than happy with the default set up for power and mpg increase.
