hi folks

hope you are all well

keep meaning to ask this question.....sometimes when i turn off engine quickly after parking and opening door,i get a beep, beep, beep, beep alarm from under bonnet....nothing has ever gone wrong.....but im curious.

i assume its some sort of alarm

is it purely because ive turned off engine too quickly?

its done it dozens of times of last 4 years or so...and ive always been curious.

but i have to admit it only seems to do it when im in a hurry

hi anchorman

no..im afraid not, that distincltly comes come under dash somewhere.

this 'other' beep, beep, beep alarm is definatley in engine bay,and as i say it only seems to go off when im in a hurry, normally if ive driven it quickly somewhere,100 yds or 1 mile,if i pull up sharpish, turn off engine quickly, open door.....this alarm sounds.

but it does seem to stop once ive closed my door & re locked it......

its allways puzzled me

no warning lights either....just a constant beep for about 10 sec's or until i close door

Could it be the Bleep Bleep Bleep that happens if you accidentally press the alarm arm button on the key without closing all the doors ?

My Bleep Bleep Bleep lives under the Battery :-)

Certainly when I've disconnected the Battery on a 4.2 I've had a beep from under the Battery but it never seemed to affect anything. Doesn't it say in the manual somewhere?

Yesterday I decided to give the Battery a top-up charge and following the advice in the handbook, I disconnected the earth lead. As I did so I heard the "bleep bleep bleep".It certainly didn't affect anything . But how did something get any power to bleep when I had supposedly disconnected all power?

Sorry- rav 4-2 2004 vvti ! John.

But how did something get any power to bleep when I had supposedly disconnected all power?

Large capacitor in ECU? Did it stop eventually?

That makes sense. Yes it did stop, in fact I didn,t really think about it until I read this post tonight.

The Toyota TVSS IV-D alarm system fitted to my 4.2 has its own back-up Battery inside it (I guess its a small nicad pack).

When you disconnect the Battery without arming the alarm, it gives a few Bleeps to warn its not getting power.

I first discovered the fact that the car alarm had its own power source at 3 am one morning. Stupidly, following tests to my tow bar electrics on a late summer evening, I had left the side lights on then locked/armed the alarm. When the voltage dropped below a certain level the alarm triggered.

(The alarm manual does says it will trigger if you disconnect the Battery when its armed).

There I was at 3am trying to switch off the alarm, however, there was not enough voltage in the car battery to reset the alarm using the key fob.

I tried old tricks, like key in the ignition etc, nothing worked. After 28 seconds the siren supposed to shut off, but each time it re-triggered due to the low voltage :-(

Then I thought I'll turn the sucker off by disconnecting the battery. My wife thought I was mad getting tools out at 3am. As I opened the bonnet the alarm sounded incredibly loud, so I tried stuffing a towel around it with not much luck, the noise got out underneath. When I disconnected the battery the alarm carried on just as loud !!!!!!!!

At this point I would have used at hammer but the alarm is well protected under the battery box.

In desperation, (mine, the wifes and the neighbours) I went and got a battery charger, extension lead and connected it up to the battery, this supplied enough voltage for me to de-arm the alarm using the key fob. Phew !!!!

Its interesting that the manual (read at 3am) gives no hint of what to do if the alarm triggers due to a flat battery.

"When I were a lad" alarms fitted with their own power source were fitted with a key to switch them off :-)

Getting back to the original "Bleep Bleep Bleep Bleep" it does sound like the warning signal from the alarm. Mine gives a warning when:

1) You disconnect the Battery when its un-armed

2) You try to arm the alarm without closing all the doors

Well spotted Ian, I'd forgotten they'd got a Battery backed up sounder.

Try working in the same lab where some other **** is trying to test 'em.

Burying them in a bucket of sand works quite well. (So does the hammer ).
