I would think the plate you saw was a cherished private owned plate.

I would suggest that is not a UK plate at all. More usually from NL to have such plates.

Well, not anymore...

We USED to have a system of 3 groups of 2 characters,

black lettering on a Yellow plate, both front and back.

As of 2000 (well actually as of 2003) all Dutch plates have

a little blue thingie with the EU-stars and "NL" on them, this is

mandatory, but you still see some motorcycles with old plates.

For cars having the wrong plates is an MOT-failure,

but motorcycles are exempt from MOT over here...

The groupings differed througout the years and once

a series ran out they jumbled the groupings again.

My car is licenced 53-TD-FD, which is in the last series

with the 3x2-grouping, as when those ran out too,

we got switched to 2 numbers, 3 letters, 1 number.

Also some letters- or combinations are reserved or prohibited,

like a license with an O in it is reserved for a Trailer (the ones

that sit ON a tractor-truck) and W is reserved for Trailers and

caravans that hook onto a towball and weigh more than 750kg.

Usually vowels aren't used either, so you can't get a "word".

Some combinations that form abbreviations with "negative

history" or that stand for political parties aren't allowed too.

If a picture exists of this mystery plate, I'd like to see it!
