Another Tire Advice Question

Hello everyone,

I ride a RAV d4d 2.0 2004 at 100.000 km with the original Bridgestone Dueller 235/60 R16 tires on it. The tires have still 4 mm on them?

I didn't like these tires from the beginning. They last long but haven't much grip.

Yesterday I experienced some aquaplaning in a light turn on the highway. I was surprised because I saw the water and had already slowed down gently to 100 km/h.

I decided to get some new tires.

Searching everywhere I came up with some tires to choose from.

Continental CrossContact UHP

Michelin Latitude Tour HP

Uniroyal 4x4 Street

I would appreciate any advice.

Yes, the bridgestones on my old 4.2 lasted 100,000 km, but I agree, they were not the best for grip.

You might have found it already, but Mereside recently highlighted this review in auto express in this post:

The tyres were tested on a 4.3, but it might help you in selecting some new one for your 4.2

I'm sure others will comment on their tyre choice soon!

Maybe I asked / searched for answers to late because today I have ordered the Michelin Latitude Tour HP.

They will be mounted saturday.

I just asked a few different Tire specialists and they all adviced the Michelins over the Continentals.

Tonight I read some tire tests and well... the CrossContacts are good or maybe even better than the Tour HP.

So I'm hesitating to change my order tomorrow.

Which will it be???

Our Rav 4.2 came with Bridgestones which needed replacing, After runnning Khumo Tyres on all my previous cars I decided to buy the Kumho KH15 Solus All Season Tyre and so far don't regret the decision. They make the ride feel slightly firmer than the bridgstones and much quiter too not to mention the cost was very reasonable at £70 ech fitted.

Can't wait for the winter to try them out properly and see if the car/tyres will prove to be a good buy and allow us to get around the Peak District safely.

Sorry I am raising this old chestnut, but I have the 4.3 with the factory fit Geo's on board, ok I have only done 11k on them but in this weather (30cm of snow) they have not put a foot wrong, no skidding slipping or anything untoward, they have allowed me to travel any road I want (ok yes I have tried hills that are supposed to be impassable successfully) but I seem to remember folks saying there are better tyres, are they really that much better for all weathers?

Hi Gus,

My Geo's have done 20K and they have taken me everywhere I have needed to go in the last couple of days on a variety of surfaces, roads and slopes. I was cursing myself for not replacing them over Christmas as they are just down to the wear indicators but they have coped admirably. Will have to replace them very shortly though.

I've got Bridgestones on mine and although I spit on the Bridgestone/Toyota RFT cartel to cheat loyal T180 owners setup, I have to take my hat off to the capabilities of the bog standard 17" tyres in the snow. There may be better tyres available but if I needed to get through much deeper snow than I have this year I would need half tracks because it seems to keep going until it bottoms out - even up hill.

I also have the 18'' Bridgestones on my T180 - last Wed I had to take some people home up a very steep hill with deep snow - no others vehicles had made it - went straight up without any problem - our hilly road at home is yet to be gritted and I have been out everyday - even to see Anchorman whose road was deep in snow last Tuesday.

Provided you have a fairly deep tread most tyres work quite well in snow.

Back in my early days when I built and raced Austin & Ford specials a friend and I used to go out on snowy evenings after work, with our specials, to see how far we could get up the Cat & Fiddle Hill near Macclesfield - BUT with bald tyres just with hacksaw cuts across the back tyres! Always with a shovel and good treads on the front and well wrapped up as they did not have heaters!

Those were the days no MOT's - no one about on the roads and So Health & Safety worries.
