Overheating

Hi my surf runs perfectly on levelish roads however when reacing a gradient ( fair to steep) it overheats within a short distance, on checking the thermostat found it to be missing.

Can anyone help ?

Could be several things causing it to overheat, but do the cheapest things 1st, new thermostat and rad cap, also get the rad flushed at a repair shop, then check that the viscous fan is working ok, then if it's still overheating get the head checked, could be cracked.
