Hi All,

Complete newcomer to Toyota as broken cam belt on my Renault Espace forced purchase.

However, I am delighted with the car, suberb drive, mint interior, close to mint body and paint despite 140 k miles. Shes a 1.8 CDX 1997 regd on a P

Need some info.

The temp gauge is behaving eraticaly, will shoot off the scale on start up then return to the corect position after about 1 min, sometimes does it when driving so a bit alarming. The car is definitely not overheating.

The handbook refers to a remote boot opener on the drivers side floor, no trace of said item or am I being blind?

Where is the cooling fan sensor located as the fan cuts in sometimes when engine is stone cold, so suspect duff.

Which of the two sensors in what looks to be the thermostat housing on the RH end of the head is the temp gauge transmitter, or is it located somewhere else?

Aircon, The button lights up when pushed put not a lot else seems to happen, any ideas or suggestions to the above would be very welcome.

Cheers,

Bill

Solved the boot release question.

Only the saloon / sedan models have a remote opener in the car, the hatch or liftback does not.

You are lucky there in Uk that can buy gas to the AC and refill it by yourself. It is not allowed here in Sweden. It is some European regulations that says that we can't do it that easy. Don't aske me why you can do it and we can't. Both countries are members in European union.

If i remember right the temp gauge used to be the cause. the combination meter has to be taken out and the clear panel taken off. then taking care the needle has to be taken off just pull and twist. when you put the needle back reset to the base setting by twisting gently. you should feel it.

when you have got the needle off the hole in the printed plastic sheet has to be widened because it is slightly off center causing the needle to stick a wee bit.

the fuel gauge also used to do the same as the temp gauge so bare in mind

the boot open handle is inside the fuel release handle or right next to it i cant quite remember sorry.

as for your a/c the pump wont operate properly unless you have some refrigerant in the system. at that mileage i think you may have a corroded pipe so no refrigerant in the system. n/s/f near the Battery the pipe runs down and bolts to the lower front panel which the rad sits on. this was always a favorite spot for a leak due to corrosion. hope this helps in some way. good luck.
