97 Rav4 Remote Car Starter

hey guys/girls,

new to the group and need some advice/confirmation.

Last Christmas I bought and successfully installed a JVC car stereo , works great and enjoy the easy IPOD hookup.

This Christmas, I have bought but not yet installed a remote car starter for the 97 Rav4.

After reading the installation manual a few times and looked at the electrical schematics in Haynes, I'm confident that I can hook it up myself.

However, there is one signal that needs to be connected to the remote starter---Tachometer--- the feedback of engine speed required to complete the start sequence. That makes sense, I'm cool with that.

I'm trying to locate this signal in the electrical schematics...the best I could find was a signal to the ECM SPD input called 'To Speedometer' violet-white

I just wanted to check with you guys out there to make sure I'm on the right track....

Hi Gary and welcome to TOC (UK). Not wishing to be unhelpful - but have you tried the rav4world.com website? I only suggest this because there are differences between the UK and US ( Canada? ) versions of the RAV. This is the sort of question that is likely to have come up on that site in the past as they are much more likely to fit remote starts than we are in the UK. If you don't have any luck there, we do have a couple of very knowledgeable guys on here on the earlier RAVs.

I've worked on only a handful of 4.1 series RAVs, and found the wiring to be different on each one -iro colour etc.

I'd use a meter and pull the instrument cluster forward to help trace back the wire connection if thats what you need. The Haynes manual was written for the USA market model and isn't a whole lot of help.

Watch that you disable the airbag - the airbag on my 1994 RAVs were purely mechanical with no electrical linkage despite being told it was triggered by sensors (electric)
