There were a number of engines - some made in France and some in Japan. You must buy the same one: check the engine numbers...

very easy to do mate and shouldn't take you longer than 4-6 hours at your door, easyest way is to drop the box and engine out the bottom of the car then lift the Shell up.

According to what I've found out, and what's listed here, all the '99-'05 1 litre engines are 1SZFE's. Whilst I suspect they're not all identical, I also suspect they are interchangeable.

today finished engine swap i know you estimated 4/6 hours to do it but took me 2 days due to extreme cold fading light from 4pm and most importantly im not very fast at anything any way now i need advice as to start the bl##dy thing it turns over and eventually tries to start but wont fire up now im lost as all engines i ever messed with years ago had a coil and so on ive checked that theres fuel at the fuel filter and also lifted each plug out and checked for spark these seem fine but where next also orange engine on dash light stays on any advice would be much appreciated

Assuming you obtained the correct engine (i.e. Jap for Jap or French for French) then i suspect the fault may lie with a missing or badly connected sensor, which would cause the ecu to output a fault code and illiluminate the MIL light.

It would make it easier to diagnose if you had access to a trouble code reader (OBDII).

cheers going to have another look tomorrow in daylight, needed to step away from it, hopefully ill see something i forgot to connect i am really baffled, trying to keep away from needing to pay for professional help as im short on work at moment thats why i decided to do swap myself also im originally from sheffield just down road from you and when i lived there you,d get a network of friends and could always ask for info or just pop round but now live bottom west coast of Ireland so bit stuck for popping round to mates ( bet you didnt enjoy leeds win at weekend  )

Please let us know how you get on (I bet you didn't do much today with all that snow!)

Sorry, but I enjoyed the win immensely (big Leeds fan, 'Marching on Together'!) Blade or Owl?

Btw was the engine in running order before you bought it?

but just to catch up i spent all day taking off cleaning and drying then putting back all connectors took off injectors and cleaned through then let good amount of fuel to run through any way it has fuel coming through spark at plugs and so on but wont fire up theres smoke coming from exhaust also i know its a bit late to ask but how do i check if its french or jap the car is a 2000 year cheers

Thank you for giving us Wilco!

Locate the VIN number on the engine and if it begins with JTD then it's Japanese, if on the other hand it begins with VNK then it's french.

If you don't have access to a trouble code reader to reset the engine management light then disconnect the Battery for 15 minutes then reconnect and try again.

Other possible causes : Immobilizer, engine coolant temp sensor, crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor (info from AutoData)

If you have installed a like for like engine and have not changed the ecu or key lock system e.g. iginition switch etc. then I would be inclined to question wether the engine was in ruuning order, and take it up with the supplier

Hope that helps.

I've got an OBD 2 code reader I used to use on our Mk 1 Yaris - it connects to a laptoop via a serial port and you run free software on the PC to view the codes and to reset them.

If that's any use and you've no better option, then I'm happy to post out to you if you'll cover the cost of postage and promise to send it back...

Send me a PM if you can't get it sorted any other way.....

very kind offer but not needed due to the garage(tw**s) that sold me engine on understanding that it was a 2000 year one now say they thought i said 2002 and that they had it because they tried to fit it to a 99 yaris and had all same problems and they can not be overcome, something about the cam shaft not linning up they say they spent hours and to no avail but they only admitted to this because when i phoned this morning they told me the mechanic in question was away for week so i went to his house only to be told by his wife he was at work so when i got to the garage i was really p**sed off the out come is they are delivering another engine tomorrow that he guarentees is the right one but im going to check engine numbers this time for sure also fella in village has a garage with a pit that i can use anyway my next update will include the words (yaris sorted wife stopped telling me to take to local garage) cheers all for advice and the one about made in japan

great news at last got another engine and checked chassis plates to confirm jap for jap then went at it Friday 11.30 am and even with my slow speed removed French engine and replaced it with jap one packed in at 8 pm Friday evening with engine fitted but trying to start .sat morning my friend who's garage i used phoned with great news that he went out and just out of curiosity connected jump leads and she fired up first time only problem now is that wife says i should have let him do car in first place  but apart from that shes happy at last to have her car back one last word its maybe 20 years since i last tinkered with anything major on a car but i didn't have one bad nut , bolt or electric connector every thing came off and went back on as it should all credit to Toyota and thanks to all who gave advice
