Very Intermittent Limp Mode Issue

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a limp mode issue I have been having in my 2005 Avensis 2.0 D4D T3-X Diesel. I have read on the Forums that alot of Limp Home Modes are caused by the EGR valve, Injectors etc etc. However the people with the problem seem to get it frequently.

I have a similar problem but it is very very intermittent. It could happen one day then I could drive my usual 80 mile round trip for 2 days. Then the car would go into limp mode a few days later.

It tends to go into limp mode when the car is back down around 40mph after having been accelerated for a long period of time over 60mph.

Is this a similar EGR problem as the other posters on this forum or is it too intermittent to be the EGR valve?

Any help would be great.

hi Andrew

this limp is deemed to be at definite load rate. What is yr closk shows (milage)? WHat jobs are normally done during each service?

Physically - the limp means that a back exhaust pressure does brake the engine during accelerating due to an EGR valve stem remains sticked in one position.

This is really common issue criated by a carbon deposits originating due to poor injection or violating of an EGR valve maintenance schedule. Cheers/Igor

Igormus,

Thanks for your quick reply. I have 63k on the clock and have had full toyota services at 10,000 mile intervals since I got it. Timing belt has just been changed. I've had the EGR valve checked for carbon deposits. This must be an electronic fault with the EGR? I'll be purchasing one this week with a view to fitting it at the weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers for your help mate.

hello again

do not spend money for new one.. the EGR is an ececutor having a command from ECU basing of lamda sygnal. THe EGR has solenoid only that shifts valve stem/plate at one of two dead positions only. And in case its solemoid is in order + good stem sliding - the only problem with el signal. I repeat - do not throw money out. CHeers/Igor

So how do you sort out a lambda signal issue? Is this sorted out by removing carbon deposits?

ok firstly have an ECU tested to see an errors codes as self explained.

Hi Igor,

Checked the EGR, no carbon deposits on it and it was very clean. I ran the car with the EGR disconnected and it did not send the car into limp mode. The EGR on the car is the motorised type. Does this mean a replacement.

Thanks

In case it is motorised then before installing you'd better to make a test by el sygnal to see how does it works.

IF only solenoid click is heard then the stem might be blocked and no movement is available.

Do not be hurry with new one purchasing.

Cheers/Igor

Hi,

I had the Fault Codes Read and am getting a fault code of P0488. This points to a EGR TPS Control CKT Range/Perf on OBDII. Is this an Avensis fault as well or does P0488 mean something else in a Toyota?

What would this code be pointing to. The valve has been checked and appears to be in working order. Many Thanks.

hi Andrew

in case an EGR valve performance is in order then the limp mode may be resulted due to not equal enjection jets from each fuel valve (injectors). I have no other idea but that. I know what did you mean as limp mode and moreover I had felt it on previous car. Have all four injectors tested first then. Cheers/Igor
