I have a 97 camry Le 4cyl, its not modified that much just has a few engine goodies, the problem has been happening not everytime i start but alot of times, on start up it ideals weird. i dont hear my intake start to suck in air untill after a couple mins, the Rpms stay down real low at around 500 Rpm, and it sounds like it is putting. i have a aftermarket intake and i cant hear it sucking in air untill after a couple of mins of ideal then the rpms jump up over 1K and you hear the intake start sucknig air in. it has some miles around 90,000 but always ran good. can some one please help me with this problem, could it be the 0'2 senser went bad?

thanks alot

How long has it been since you change out the air filter?

When a car turns over the pistions go up and down. The push up will cause air to go out the exhaust. The drop back down causes a suck or vacuum. At that point it has to be drawing air through the Carb/ throttle body.

So if your not hearing a sound, I would guess that air filter is clogged, not letting the air get by.

If not enough air is getting pulled in that would explain the low RPM's.

cant be the problem, the reason i can hear intake sucking in is becouse i have an aftermarket short ram air intake, just added it, accouple months ago, filter is in perfict condition

How hard would it be to take the ram off and drive a mile or two to see if that is causing a problem.

I'm not there to see of course, it's just what I think of from what you describe.

If not you must be having a fuel supply problem. Because if it has spark at idle it will have spark at higher RPM's.

So your left with air or fuel getting messed up.

  • 2 weeks later...

Doubt if it's the O2 sensor as this is not in the loop on initial start-up.Has the check engine light come on?Could the timing of this be related to the addition of the intake?
