I have owned Toyota's for many years and have never found the dipped lights very good!! I have recently purchased a new Verso to replace my previous Verso and like you found the dipped headlight beam very poor !!

I asked at my local dealership who I have a very good relationship with if it was possible to replace the dipped headlight bulbs with a better bulb !!

I was told that it could affect the warranty on the headlights if the bulbs were replaced with non standard ones !!

I know on the Avensis there were problems with headlight bulbs melting in the plastic holders and the unit had to be replaced under warranty with metal ones so I am reluctant to take a chance myself but if it was outside the warranty period it may be different

thanks guys for your replies, Blue verso my 180 is out of warranty next month, but still wouldn't like to take any chances like that.

thanks for the link 999 i will have a good look at this and see if i can take anything from it.

If anyone else has any other advice or links please be kind enough to share your knowledge

cheers

Here is what I wrote in a similar thread;

As far as I can see the light seems to roll over the bumper and fall on the ground just in front of the car .

I thought about xenon conversions but here in Holland for cars registered after January 2007 you need automatic levelling as well, and my Verso is from March 2007. I could risk it but don’t want the hassle.

Unfortunately the HB3/HB4 bulbs are difficult to get in Europe, but not so in the USA. I eventually bought the Philips VisionPlus +50% from www.SUVlights.com for $25 a pair. (I thought about the Philips Xtreme Power +80% at $39 but with the higher price and shorter life, decided not to).

The bulbs have both the USA DOT and the European E approval. Stamped on the base, so they are street legal here.

The results are impressive, instead of a vague yellowish blob in front of the car there is now a white clearly defined area, you can now see the straight line where the beam is cut off by the reflector and the extended area along the curb side is clearly visible.

So this along with the fact that the bulbs actually cost less than the standard replacements here, I can recommend them.

Also they have the same wattage rating as the originals, so they won't melt the holders.

Hope this helps,

Regards Andy.

Myself I just cannot understand why if a better bulb is available why Toyota does not try to fit these as standard as this is a common complaint by owners !!

Thanks Zwart_Verso for your info it is very useful

I would try these: Ring +100% bulbs.

Be careful with the type, as I said earlier HB3 & HB4 are difficult to get in Europe even just normal replacements.

By the way, it is possible to buy the +50% bulbs form Toyota, but I could not find out which make they are. (The original bulbs were from Sylvania (= Osram)). The dealer did say they were better but did not last as long so he wouldn’t recommend them. But the lights were so bad I decided to upgrade. The Philips seem to have the best test results so I went with them. Also the price in the USA is so much cheaper than here, it is still cheaper to replace them more often than stick with standard (unless you buy the standard from USA).

This was the first time I had ordered anything from the USA, but it was a question of order, pay with Credit card (via PayPal) and 10 days wait. There is of course a chance you might have to pay VAT if customs pick them out, but mine were delivered no problems. I ordered both Dipped and Main Beams.

Fitting is no problem, it is a bit fiddly but you do not have to remove anything, (unplug the connector, turn the bulb, it is a bayonet fitting, fit the new one and reconnect) took me about 30 minutes to do all 4. Note that I have a LHD model so the under bonnet layout might be different.

Hope this helps, Andy

That actual link is the right fitment for a 2004> Verso. It is a HB4 fitment for the dipped beam and HB3 for the main beam.

I would recommend Ring Ultra xenon (up to 50% more light). I bought them at approx £15 per pair of HB3 and HB4 over a year ago from www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk and have been quite pleased with the results. I drive 06 2.2 T3 along country lanes and the difference here is very noticeable. On unlit motorways I can drive on dip with adjustment at 0 and pick out lane markings past stopping distance at 70mph. I drive with dip during daytime, much of the time, so they seem to have reasonable longevity. I am thinking of upgrading my foglights, which are also pretty useless for purpose (compared even with Mk 1 Punto fogs) and getting Ring xenon Max + 100% upgrade HB4 bulbs from same supplier at £25.99 + FREE UK p&p. Check it out 23 Jan 2010.
