Rav 4.3 Faults

There have been various faults reported on the rav 4.3, Anchs knows a lot of them + various people have had mods improvements rectified by their respective dealers, should we not, as the leading Toyota forum be pooling this knowledge for the benefit of everyone, why i am posting this is that on a seperate post a member has brought to light that the pink coolant that i assume we all have in our cars is effectively causing damage to head gaskets, Now i find this worrying + wonder if this is the case why Mr T are not replacing it before we get a problem, I hope i am not being alarmist, but I know a couple of members work for Mr T and others are far more knowledgable than I am, if i had only known of the Dmf issue 2wks before i did (when my car was 5yrs +2wks old) it would have saved me £1000.. So what i am asking if anyone knows of an issue could you please share it with us so that hopefully we can take appropriate action if needed Thanks Stew..... P.S. my dmf issue was on my previous 4.2 d4d...

Hi Local Hero,

Regarding your post you might like to hear my storey regarding my 06 4.3 / XT5.

March - I had a new sat - nav unit fitted because the blue tooth had packed up.

June - Discs & pads all round due to severe brake judder.

Had a service in July and was told I had an oil leak, dropped the rav back a few days later and thats the last I saw of it for 4 weeks, they diagnosed a leak from head gasket, leaking water pump and leak from sump, bearing in mind it never lost water or oil, also the EGR valve and inlet manifold required replacement, along with the alternator apparently it had been contaminated with oil, well I thought Mr. T knows best.

A fortnight later the service manager phoned, there was a problem with the front drive shafts and warrenty weren't prepared to cough up, the bottom line was they were damaged by the dealer when removing the engine and they expected me to pay £491 plus vat each. As you might expect i was soon round there, when they showed them to me both threads had been stripped they said it always happens, I told him quite forcfully I wanted them replaced at no cost to me. After numerous calls I made to the dealer and Toyota customer service it was agreed that the garage would stand the cost.

Nearly 4 weeks later the car was ready however there was now an ABS light on I didn't even get off the forecourt so back in the Yaris for another couple of days while they fitted a new sensor.

When I finally picked the car up it ran like a bag of s**t. Its sounded like a bag of spanners and was gutless compared to when it went in, and to rub it in it was dropping oil all over the drive, ironic really has it never did before.

Back to the garage to be fobbed off they said the perfomance return to normal once the head gasket bedded in, must think I'm mad, and the oil was residue from the work done.

I ran it for a month still not happy so took it to another Mr. T in the next town and asked them to take a look didn't mention the previous work. The oil leak was from the turbo return pipe the end had been crimped and they agreed it was gutless.

They first fitted a new ECU as there was no fault codes showing, still the same knocky and gutless they then put a set of injectors in that did the trick the power was back and no diesal knock it runs better now than it ever did.

So to summerise all work was done under warrenty - Sat - Nav , Front & Rear Discs / Pads , Head Gasket, Water Pump, Sump Gasket, EGR Valve, Inlet Manifold cleaned, Alternator, 2 x Front Drive Shafts, ABS Sensor, Oil Pipe from Turbo, ECU, Set of Injectors.

As I said it runs like a dream now, oh! and I forgot to mention all this with milage of just 25,500 I hope 2010 will be trouble free!!

Thats interesting. I've had my T180 from new, now 30K on it, and its had..

Discs skimmed @6000 miles & Steering column joint replaced & Bolts holding steering column tightened & ECU reflash /injectors /EGR thingy etc & Bolts holding OSF window regulator tightened... + numerous wipers...!

Since the ECU re-flash, it seems as flat as a f@rt and guzzels "V"power at an alarming rate...

Maybe we should run a "league table" for "direct" faults i.e. not wear n tear...??

Carlos, Your story is why I stay well clear of main dealers, The lies they tell are shocking, expecting you to cough up for damage they have done, had a similar issue with a golf once. They were clueless. For the money you pay at main dealer you expect the best. It sounds like they just swap parts out and hope for the best, do they not understand the principle of fault finding, ie checking circuits, checking faulty parts on a bench etc. Swap and pray? if not in warranty could cost the driver a fortune.

Hopefully all main dealers are not the same, but the damage has been done as far as i`m concerned, the price they charge for what they actually do is amazing...

Thanks for replies so far on this, I think Stewyinpaghams idea of a none wear + tare league table is a great idea, most of us with 4.3s will soon be aproaching the end of Mr Ts warranty + if we have a list we can get any (known faults) at least checked over + any upgrades done as neccesary, A lot of new members look for a forum like this when a problem raises its head and sometimes this can be too late, also if we know others are/have had similar problems we can go to Mr T with the knowledge that this is not unique to our own vehicle. I do believe that the Rav is a great car, The only known fault on the 4.2 (diesel) was the dreaded DMF which I think Mr T did its best to hide, Already on the 4.3.. EGRs, steering column faults, brakes re-skimmed, injectors replaced, sumps leaking, possible headgasket problems, door mirrors rattling, and maybe not a fault but I also think my Rav was better pre ECU re-flash certainly as far as mpg is concerned  Stew

Hi Stew,

Could we manage this in the same way as we do a poll? We could have a list of problems and people could in effect "vote" for a particular problem if they have had it. It would probably be more useful if there was more than one column for every fault so that instead of voting "yes" or "no" you could put a tick in a particular mileage band for when it occurred ( i.e. 0 - 10k, 10 - 20k, 20 - 30k etc ). It would give us a lot of initial information and we could then ask which faults occurred in "series" on a particular vehicle and/or whether a fault re-occured. Getting an initial collection "form" on the site would be the first requirement. Do you know of any instructions for setting one up? I might not be able to do it as I haven't been able to find a way of renewing my subscription which ran out in May. :(

If i am honest I don't know how to do a poll  but i think something similar, A list we could add to and as you say mileages when these problems have occured is a great idea  My main concern is my Rav is 2yrs 7mths but has only done 13,500mls, to be fair it has so far been fault free (had the discs skimmed at 10,000 service) but i have already contacted Mr T with regards to extending warranty, Don't really know if its wise to go ahead as at 5yrs old it will prob have only done 30,000 at the most, However I cannot see me changing it in the foreseeable future so its most likely if any of these issues raise their head i am likely to be out of warranty anyway..Stew

Hi Stew,

My xt5 will be 2 years old in april and has now done 14,000 miles, so I'm not in a much better position than you. Can't remember who set up the last survey but I think that Hoovie did one about a year ago. I'll PM him if he dosen't show up in the next few days.

Will do one when I get chance - sit tight!

Hi Anchorman,

I'd no intention of lumbering you with the task! Is it a "moderators only" job? :o

No anyone can do it but been working today and same tomorrow so it will be a while before I can do it.

If you fancy a go just click on create poll in new topic and do a list of all the faults but do it for T180s and a seperate one for the others.

If it doesn't work I will just delete it for you.

Just got in from fixing the daughters Corolla. The nuts had coroded off the lambda sensor so took the front section of the exhaust off so i could run a die down the threads. It was a bit of a maul but considering the exhaust is original (1999) i think she got off lightly!
