Tpms Light On....advice Needed!

Hi

To my dismay, I set off for work this morning and then noticed the tyre warning light on the dash :crybaby:

This morning is the coldest yet (-3 deg C on the Rav4 display) and I wondered if the cold could cause a tyre pressure on a tyre that might be borderline pressure, to come into alarm? When I got to work, when I mentioned the light to a workmate, he said the same thing.

Then again, I would have thought that after the 20 min drive to work, the air in the tyres may have warmed up and it cleared (if that was the problem). I did feel the tyres when I came into work and they still felt cold.

Has anyone else ever had a similar problem?

I assume the only way you can check if there is a problem is to go to a petrol station and check the pressures before arranging a visit to the Toyota dealer with the gear (50 miles away).

I only got the car in August....and I am feeling pretty miffed to possibly have to fork out £££ to Toyota for this problem after 4 months.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

patrick

Also...does anyone know what pressures I should expect to see on the 18" SR180 runflats?

Hi Patrick,

Its true the cold does affect the pressure readings and they read slightly lower in the cold . Mines done that once and never done it since.. So i would read the pressures yourself (even keep a small pressure gauge in the car for peace of mind )

I keep my pressures around 30 - 32 when tyres are cold .

Hope this helps .

Mick

Cheers Mick

I've actually just been out and done that...both tyres on drivers side were 26psi and both on passenger side 24psi

A guy at work had a little gauge and a compressor, so after consulting the manual, we pumped them all to 31psi (to account that it is still -2deg outside and perhaps a bit colder than what you would normally class as cold).

I suppose that buying a ex-dealer car, I thought the pressures would have been ok.

Hopefully that is it now

hi Patrick

The problem is the normal air pressure in your tyres is subject to the surrounding air themperature. To prevent any allarms etc I used to have all tyres pumped in with a composite gas (air + nitrogen) that allows the internal pressure to be a constant both in winter in summer times. My leg air pump got rusted due to not in use. So this composite gas works fine subject to the nitrogen % is more than an air's. Yes this comoposit gas costs a bit more but yoou safe your nervous etc. Cheers/Igor

Isn’t there a sticker on the inside edge (drivers side) where the door shuts to (not the edge of the door itself),

should give the tyre pressures for the model of your particular car

It does on mine!

Hope this helps ;)

The TPMS valve transmits tyre temperature as well as pressure to the TPMS ECU, for use in the monitoring algorithm.

If you do some simplified physics/maths, you can work out that, roughly speaking, for every 10C change in temperature you'll get about 1psi change in pressure.

Up to 1-2 psi loss per month is also quoted by some, which is at least one reason why motoring organisations bang on about regularly checking your tyre pressures.
