Another Battery Question

Greetings all,

Joined today having closed the deal on a RAV4.2 XT3. I am already very grateful to you folks for the technical bits as the car is a probate sale and currently a non runner as the previous owner had been ill for some time. The odds are that a good jump start will help the cause no end so the teckie pice on how to find and get at the Battery are a big help - you can see from this that I am starting from scratch.

Now the help I need concerns the best way to jump the thing without incurring the wrath of the radio and alarm/immobiliser. I have seen a reference to turning the ignition key to the auxiliary position and to various button pressing on the remote key. An idiots guide as to not foul things up would be a big help.

from a very cold and dark Dartmoor

I've had the alarm go off when the Battery is run down but it tends to be a symptom of unlocking the car on low Battery rather than something that happens when I jump it. Not sure exactly what I did to fix it, but locking and unlocking the car using the fob should probably do the trick once it's hooked up to the other Battery.

Welcome to the club.

They are more often trouble free when fitting a new Battery so don't worry too much. It will bleep when you dieconnect the old Battery (if there is any life left in it) but ignore that and go ahead - there are good instructions in the pinned section that Uncle Bob provided.

Put your Battery on and if it plays up just press and hold both buttons on the remote until the indicators answer back and that should re-sync it.

All the best and enjoy your bargain - its a cracking motor.

Many thanks to both of you for the quick response. I will see how I get on this afternoon.

In the meantime another very basic query, I am afraid. I am paranoid about using a car without knowing how to change a wheel. I see a very helpful diagram here showing the jacking points, I haven't (yet) managed to find the jack! Gimme a hint please!

No snow on Dartmoor but it is minus five outside!

On the 4.2, try looking under the driver's seat.

Now that was a very useful bit of advice cos there it is and it would have been a long time before I thought of that.

The jump leads did the trick despite heavy snow at the time and it is now started and back home with the electronic mileometer showing 27400 miles since new (MOT certs confirm). So now begins the tidy up for MOT and the removing the ravages of Dartmoor hedgerows and one not always careful lady owner.

I'm very grateful for the help I have already had from this very friendly forum. Happy Christmas to all you boys and girls out there.

From a now white Dartmoor with the light fading the sky clearing and the temperature dropping. Tomorrow's roads will be interesting.

I remember being "persuaded" to help pick large quantities of bilberries on Dartmoor as a child. Yes, they can look similar, but I very quickly learned the difference between bilberries and sheep (or was it rabbit?) ***t. A special place
