Spare Key Transponder

Hey just a quick question, if its stupid sorry but, My mum had the main key for the Aygo so I just used the spare, So I went out to go out in the car tried to start the car and it wouldn't start it ticked over but wouldn't engage, I thought the starter motor had stuck so was trying every thing to get it going with no luck..

Anyway.. my mum comes home and I try it once more before calling the RAC with the main key and it starts first time.. so tried it with the spare and it wont start...

Someone I talked to said it was sometimes normal for spare keys not to have transponders in but pretty much defies the point of a spare key doesn't it??

So anyway is this normal?? If not any suggestions on why this has happened.

Thanks Matty.

That doesn't make any sense. The Aygo comes factory fit with an immob. so it goes that all keys have a transponder ... otherwise, as you say, whats the point of spare/additional keys?

We have a total of three (3) keys with our Aygo: x2 transponders and x1 'standard' key. Each key works flawlessly.

Perhaps yours has lost its coding somehow?

The Aygo is supplied as standard with one REMOTE LOCKING key and one NON-REMOTE key

Both should carry transponders and should start your car

Spare remote locking keys are priced at over £100 from Toyota dealers, including programming

Cheers for the responses guys, its the non central locking one that wont start the car, unlocks it fine but just wont switch off the immobiliser, its not really an issue, its just had me thinking the something was up with the car when it wouldn't start.

Thanks for your help.

  • 8 years later...

I bought a used 2009 Aygo last year and it came with only one key which was the non-remote type without a transponder. The doors are centrally lockable and the key unlocks the whole car when used in the driver's door. It also stars the car as well. I have three questions:

1. Have I just got a very basic Aygo which was never built with remote central locking?

2. Where can I get a spare key blank from (all my online searches show remote locking keys with buttons)?

3. Where can I get the key cut (Toyota dealer or a high street key cutter?

Many thanks.

Hi Peter, welcome to TOC 🙂

Your car key will have a transponder otherwise the immobiliser would stop it starting ...

Going by the quote/link below it sounds like the remote key has been lost at some point (or at least not been given to you).

A Toyota dealer can but also try one of the Timpsons that specialises in car keys - it should be much cheaper. Somebody (Toyota, Timpsons, whoever) will have to clone the transponder to the new key so that the car starts.
