Knocking Sound Under The Bonnet

i have a 99 avensis 1.6 that is suffering from a loud knock in the front suspension area. when i reverse the car and apply the brake i hear the knock same if im going forward and braking. its driving me insane. does anyone have ay ideas. i thought it might have been the pads shifting but it doesnt look like it.

Does it make any diffence weather you turn the steering wheel or not? Do you only hear it when breaking?

it only happens when im braking. the steering has no effect on it. it sounds like its coming from the brakes but i cant find anything.
