Help Needed- 5th Gear Nut Came Loose Now Clutch?

Hi,

My wife's 2005 Rav 4 D2D had a knocking noise when changing between 1st & 2nd gear. She took it to the Main Toyota dealer who charged £300 as the nut has came off the 5th gear cog and damaged the shaft?

New parts required (approx £80) and car all OK. This was on wednesday of last week and last evening the car wouldn't move as the gears wouldn't respond.

Got car towed back to the dealer this morning and advised now the clutch and fly wheel have gone and they want £1700!!

I can't believe these 2 items are unrelated and was wondering if any of you techie guys have heard of this? The car was out of warranty in June 2008 and has done 55K miles.

Only used to travel to and from work and serviced yearly at the main dealer!

Am I being fleeced or is this a problem with Rav4's? Do i have any recourse with Toyota as I find it hard to believe a car of this build and cost should have a shelf life of 4 1/2 years?

My celica ST (1997) has done 220K with the same clutch so you can imagine my frustration with this!

:angry:

Cheers

Welcome to the club.

I wish you had looked in for more sociable reasons and not with such a problem. I think you need to look at this from the pinned section at the top of the page;

Have a read and come back if you have any questions.

Cheers Anchorman,

Seems that I should read a bit more closely! Sorry :unsure:

Looks like the first point is to question why such an obvious problem should have resulted in fixing something else?

I will also ring Toyota tomorrow to discuss the warranty as another site (Honest Johns) had mentioned about the extension of the warranty for this part and I should be looking for a real contribution?

Will let you know how I get on!
