Only 1 Key

hi guys.

Just bought a 2007 2.2D Spirit Estate.

Only supplied with one key.

No problem I thought!

Local dealer took details and ordered new key, took in car to have new key programmed to car only to find that the key no supplied by Toyota does not match vehicle.

No record of any key/lock change on file. Dealer thinks info input incorrectly by supplying dealer as they have entered all sorts of rubbish in service booklet.

No problem I thought. Just need uncut transponder key which we can cut from original and then programme to car.

Apparently uncut keys are not available so dealer has taken photo of key to try to obtain key no. This may work but forgive me for being a little doubtful.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Uncut transponder key supplier? Going to France at new year so would like to have a spare before then.

Thanks

Tim

I think something similar happened on here once before, turned out that locks had been changed on the car at somepoint, probably either because the car had been stolen and later recovered or stop someone else taking it.

They ended up having all the locks and ignition barrel replaced to get new keys, cost well over a grand.

Presuming you didn't buy it from a Toyota dealer, the best place to start is maybe the place you bought it from to see if they can help in any way. If there's no help from that direction try what 'in the no' suggested and have a word with the previous owner.

As already said, lost toyota keys mean a big hole in your pocket but there are some specialist companies who will supply keys and recode cheaper than Mr T (one out manchester way but their name eludes me)

Good luck.

This type of problem is fairly common on many modern cars and not just Toyotas.

I think the morale of the story is. Don't by a used car unless it has all keys corrrect and present - if so offer a grand less.

Plus many insurers take a dim view if the car is stolen and the owner can't produce all keys.:)

Hi spirit1509,

Why don't you tell your insurance company that you have "lost your keys," some companies will pay up for this and save you an awful lot of cash. Maybe a bit naughty but .......! ;)

Best regards and all the best ... Pete.

Hi,

Had a similar problem bought the car about 7 weeks ago ,only one key .the sales man promised a second key and to cut a long story short sent me to a auto key supplier/programmer. The key I had been supplied with was not the master.I was supplied with a new master ,took about an hour don't know what it cost I didn't have to foot the bill.As I live in the Glasgow area there is no point in me giving you the particulars of this locksmith but there must be someone in your area .

Good luck keep at the salesman.

Due to the horrendous cost envolved in this issue, i too would go down the road of " lost your keys".If your insurance covers this type of loss, do it !!. You will save mega, and because of the fact that it is an insurance job, you will get the job and full set of replacement keys done properly.
