I drove my surf in the 4HL posistion for about 5 miles on tarmac, ice and snow at about 20mph with various left and right turns.I am worried i might have damaged the gearbox although i did drive it for about 200 miles in normal 2wd mode without any problems. Is their anyway i can check for damage or should i get it looked at

I think you would know if it had done any damage by any strange noises from the transmission, and as it was on snow and ice at low speed it should be OK, but why didn't you just use 4wd unlocked.
