How To Change Complete Headlamp?

Hello all,

Monday this week my wife's SR180 driver (rh) side headlamp was busted. No other damage. I hasten to add it was not any fault of my wife. Parked, handbrake applied and left in gear. Car then took it upon itself to start intimate relations with a locally parked Avensis. I kid you not.

Anyway, I now have a genuine replacement headlamp unit and hope to fit this over the next few days.

I would appreciate advice on how to do this, if anyone here has experience or could send me a link.

As yet, I have not even looked but am presuming that the unit is removed from with the bonnet.

I am well equipped with every day tools but do not have much specialist equipment.

Sorry not going to be helpful at all except to ask whether you have the 'smoked' colour headlamp case?

But i have to ask how does a car that has handbrake on and in gear move? Did it literally skid with the wheels locked into the other car?

Hello Nick!

Just follow the instruction and after you've removed the front bumper, just open the screws that hold headlamp. Two on top and two on the side, if I remember correctly.

Good Q. SWMBO has been driving for 29 yrs and this is her 1st incident. The lady driver of the Avensis witnessed it and said she 'utterly confounded'.

I can only presume that, as the brake discs cooled and contracted, the handbrake failed and gravity took over.

There is no claim on insurance and this is not a spoof. Hence my having purchased a new headlamp unit.

The headlamp case is bog standard, ie. not smoked (actually, I've never seen the like).

Well, may i say what bad luck that must have been. I am glad at least there will not be any insurance hit from it.

The T180/SR180 headlight case is of a different shade to standard Auris's, you best make sure you have the right part as you might end up with a different/mismatch shade on each side.

changing the headlamp it's not so complicated work, you need a little bit attention and care;

as alex "said" before, first time remove the top air radiator deflector, then the bumper;

then remove front bumper assembly:

first time remove the retainers

apply some masking tape onto indicated areas

remove the 6 screws, 4 bolts and release the 3 latch;

release 6 grabs and remove the front bumper assembly, as shown in the figure;

(in order to complete this operation, you need another person to help you)

(this procedure is also, usefull for changing the horn)

remove headlamp assemblies:

remove the 3 bolts and screws;

disconnect connectors and remove the headlight assembly

This is great, Tavey.

Noticed my drivers side cluster has been replaced at some point but the panels don't quite sit right below the housing. I'll take the bumper off and see if it's snagging somewhere.
