Possible Head Gasket Failure? 1998 Avensis 1.8

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice please.

I have a 1998 1.8 Avensis with 134K on the clock. The coolant expansion bottle goes from full to empty when left overnight following a run of about 70 miles. There are no visible leaks, no evidence of water in the oil or oil in the water. The car runs sweetly and idles properly. It does not overheat and never has.

This morning having left the car overnight I took out the spark plugs and turned over the engine. A mist was briefly noted which was forced out of the cylinder nearest the oil filler.

Any ideas?

If it is the head gasket how long should it take for a skilled mechanic to change it and how much would replacement cost at an independent garage?

Thanks

Chris

When refilling the coolant bottle have you been using a proper mix of anti-freeze or just plain water??:)

I have been refilling with a proper mix of antifreeze and water to give protection down to about -20 degrees.
