Avensis Catalytic Converter

Help,

I have a 2003 1.8 Avensis tourer, with just under 60,000 miles on the clock. On a recent drive the engine warning light came on. Took it to a Toyota Main dealer and then ran a diagnostic check and informed me the Catalytic Converter and EMC needs replacing at a cost of £1,450 !

I know I can still drive the car satisfactorily with this warning light on ( I HAVE A 300 MILE TRIP TO COMPLETE THIS WEEKEND! )

But what I wanted to know is has anyone else come across this issue?

Are Toyota just taking me for a ride charging £1,450 to change it? Could it be an issue just with the EMC that is reporting a false error?

Please help! Independent garages I have contacted have said they have never heard of a cat going wrong on an avensis!

Any help most appreciated. Thanks

For what its worth, I have the same engine and the Cat was changed at about 40k if memory serves me correctly. It was under warranty though. The ECU may not need to be changed, it wasn't in mine!
