Hi,

I have a auris t spirt diesel that has an intermittant cold start problem. some times when it is cold it just cranks over and over and has difficulty starting. lots of smoke comes out the exhaust. it does eventually fire but takes a few attempts.

any ideas what is wrong. the toyota garage says this is normal????

and says the car does not have any glow plugs???

please help

It is a Diesel :D

May be worth to check filters, glow plug if exists or contact MrT to see if ECU is not getting "confused" when it is cold.

I started a thread way back with the same problems.

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...st&p=796063

My T-Spirit with push button start, does have glow plugs and I changed them thinking that was the problem. NOPE. Changed all the filters. NOPE. Tried different diesels(i.e. esso, bp,shell inc v-power etc etc.) NOPE.

Turns out that what was the cause of my problems was that the previous service, when I bought the car from Toyota no less, was done using the wrong grade of oil. They put in 10w40 instead of using 5w30. I called a few dealers in my area and they all said use 5w30. So I did and the starting problem has not come back. (Touch wood)

I'm guessing because it's a thinner oil when cold it can crank over the engine better. Maybe it has something to do with oil pressure and be able to get it more quickly with thinner oil, don't know................

A more technical answer would be appriciated by anyone reading who knows.......................

Anyways try changing the oil to 5w30.

I am afraid mine has exactly the same problem even with the 5w30 grade oil.

How i get round mine is to push the start button (twice) without clutch down to get into standby position for a few seconds first, then clutch down and start. I suppose this let the glow plug to work its magic longer than a standard start would. When i do this it starts first time and without chugging.

I hope this helps.

Aah the kiss of death.............Looks like i've got this to look forward to again. :crybaby:

I did also note that on really cold days the glow plugs would still only light up for about 1/4 - 1/2 sec. Seems pretty short to me. So I agree with you that pushing the start button twice into standby mode will get a little more heat out of the glow plugs.

Maybe with a future ecu reflash toyota will extend the glow plug warming time to suit outside conditions better..........

Our T180 is fine, we just get in press the clutch and push the start button once and it starts every time first time even when it was -7 in Scotland last week
