Drum Brakes Locked!

Pulled into a garage today, stopped and put on handbrake. Few mins later started to reverse out and it felt like I was reversing over a road cone or summat :o so got out but nothing there, kept going but rear wheels were locked and couldn't move. Called AA and they said brake shoes were worn right down to the metal and had jammed on somehow...

He said there were some clips to replace a swell as shoes but I've just got replacement shoes but no clips or anything else in the box...

Will I need to replace drums also or will they be OK & is replacing the shoes a fairly simple job - anybody got tips about what to look out for...

Thanks

Mark

Sounds like you have a problem that is caused by a detached brake shoe surface. And after that the detached surface ha gone beween the drum and the other brake shoe.

The drum might be pretty tight if the case is what i think it is.

The clips the AA man was talking about are normally sold separate from the brake shoes. It is a mounting kit you need to buy.

Get the brake drums stripped down first. Maybe all you need is a set of shoes.

I have seen many delaminated shoes whereby the adhesive bonding fails and not just on Toyotas. The main cause is the range of temperatures they have to withstand and such faults are much more common in colder weather especially if the drums have become damp and freeze up inside then suddenly are boiling hot when applied.:)
