60,000m Service

Looking at a 2003 Rav4 for my wife, 2.0 nrg petrol (she currently has a 1996 GS), and its due its 60k service, the second hand dealer seems reluctant to perform this, he said he would do a safety check (I'm assuming this means he will give it a quick glance and pump the tyres up a bit), any way is this a major service interval, I know it does not require a cam belt as its chain driven. I have googled this but cant seem to find any info, thanks in advance.

From past experience, make sure the serpentine belt is changed, they do snap, my sister in laws 2002 model only has 54k on the clock, and it just snapped in North Yorkshire, make sure it is not perished looking or shiny and worn looking on top, if it is get it changed to be on the safe side.

Hi,

Hope this helps, I have a diesel but my Haynes manual covers both models and suggests valve clearance check and adjustment for 60k service on a petrol model.

Plus everything you would have on 10k and 20k as required, which would include brake fluid change, fuel filter change, spark plugs (check and renew if necessary), cooling system flush and renewal, transmission lubricant renewal, pollen filter, air filter, oil filter and oil change.

Plus a whole list of other checks which if anything involves a quick 30 second visual glance over the pipes, exhaust, brakes and tyres and generally involves ticking a load of boxes unless something blindingly obvious strikes them while they're doing the other bits.

Of course they don't work straight off what a Haynes manual suggests and some garages will do less than others in terms of fluid renewal etc., best thing is to get a couple of quotes and ask them to list what is included at the very least the parts and fluids that are being changed and that the price includes them and the VAT, they wont really want to list all the checks, I haven't managed to get one dealer to do this in advance yet (although it really shouldn't be that difficult to copy and paste the same list they should be doing for everyone but of course then they can't pull the wool then can they?)

My 60k on the diesel was £400 ish but this included the timing belt renewal (very little else was done).

It should be worth a couple of hundred off the asking price though if this hasn't already been adjusted to take this into account.

I personally would only check the valve clearance if you can hear a problem as adjusting them is a very complex procedure for even the most skilled mechanic.

Excellent thanks a lot everyone, decided not to get it in the end. But have bought a 2002 2.0 nrg with a genuine 37.5k miles on the clock from a Subaru dealer who is happily servicing and moting it before we pick it up next week.
