Avensis Intermittent Power Loss

I have an Avensis D4D 2005 Estate. Over the past 6 weeks I have been experiencing intermittent power loss. This has happened both at low speed and high speed, the car will simply start losing speed and will not respond even with the accelerator pedal to the floor, no change in revs at all. After 10-20 seconds the car will return to normal and will accelerate as normal. There doesn't appear to be any smoke coming from the car during the loss of power. There are no warning lights present on the dash. This was initially only happening once a week but is now almost every time i drive the car, it seems to only occur though once the engine is warm.

The car has spent the last 2 days at my local toyota dealer. They have reported that they cannot find any faults with the car, no engine fault codes are present and after several test drives cannot get the fault to occur. It has been recommended that this may be an EGR fault as the symptoms are similar to other cars thay have dealt with with the same problems and EGR replacement has resolved the problems on those vehicles. This is only a recommendation and not guarented to fix the problem and for £416 I'm not so keen :-)

Does this sound like an EGR problem? Can the EGR only be replaced or is it something that can be serviced by myself easily? Is it likely to be anything else?

Any advice/help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm currently experiencing something similar. However, my car runs fine until I have been driving for around an hour. You wouldn't think there is a problem at all. Then out of nowhere the car goes into limp mode ( where the ecu restricts revs so that you can't go above 2000 revs and cause damage to the engine). The fault I have read when this happens is P0488 which refers to the EGR valves position sensor, but because it only happens after an hour I'm confused as to whether its a problem with the EGR or the ECU.

There has been alot of discussion around this D4D engine issue and many people have solved it by changing their Supply Control Valves (SCVs) and others have solved it by changing their EGR.

As far as I can see changing the EGR should be easy enough, but I am aware they are quite costly (£200 roughly).

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=87986 is a post about the SCVs on a RAV 4 but it is still a D4D engine.

If anyone can help shed some light on code P0488 on EBD II I would be very greatful. Waiting for a car to limp isn't much fun.

Don't know if this helps but my avensis experienced a similar problem about 2 years ago lossing power etc, took it to Mr T etc and EGR replacement was suggestedalthough not guaranteed to cure the problem. Decided to take ithe car to my local mechanic and he suggested replacing glow plugs!!! (even after telling him the car started perfectly when cold and the problem only arose when warm). He said that he had changed the glow plugs on a previous customers avensis and it seemed to work. I told him to go ahead and change the plugs as it was cheaper than an EPG and have never had any bother since (140,000miles).

Did you get a fault code for that problem?
