Hi

we have a 09 Aygo Black with the standard fit alloys which are fine except the wheel nuts are showing signs of rust - I'm sure our dealer will replace these (hopefully) but I'd like to fit some alloys caps (plastic chrome effect) there are loads on eBay but can anyone tell me the size of the nut??? Are Aygos 17 or 19mm - not tech idea so don't actually know where to measure from to find out - I'm sure one of you tech minded guys will know the answer straight off!

Cheers and H N Y!

As far as I know they are ***17 :D

You need BOLTS, not nuts!!!

If you have alloys from Toyota you need tapered ones with thick washers like these:

Thread is M12x1,5 (I think) and socketsize is 17mm (THAT I know for sure).

Hi MD1,

The Aygo has 17mm wheel nuts size , as Jan says they are bolts, some buy the chrome headed bolts, have just bought a set of chrome caps myself, more to prevent the rusting of my wheel nuts and they look OK too.

I'm fed up replacing rusty Toyota Aygo wheel bolts. In earlier posts I managed to get Toyota to replace them a year or so ago (whilst still under warranty and with a lot of pushing by my dealer who eventually replaced them and carried on with Toyota). The second set have all done the same thing again and gone rusty. I don't use any agressive wheel cleaner either, but they look horrible. I have just got a quote from Toyota to replace them - £3.97 + VAT each. As I have Toyota alloys, the locking wheel nut is fine, so I need 12! Over £50!

I would like to get some of the chrome covers which have been mentioned. To be sure I get the right thing, where would I be best to get these from and exactly what do I need? Looking at the bolts that have gone rusty, I think it is purely surface rust, so I would hope it doesn't affect their actual function?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

hi rencar12, I purchased mine from Rockshore, they may not be the cheapest but you get 20 in the pack and they are metal not plastic, with getting 20 you have spares when needed. i have seen them on eBay but I've never used eBay so don't know what they are like. Rockshore were pretty quick on dispatch as well

hope the link works for you.

Having been fore-warned about this I periodically spray WD40 on the bolts - so will see how they go.

Hmm so these chrome caps , once you push them on as a tight fit ,how do you get them back off to fit the wheel nut brace, as I'm guessing the size would have gone from the standard 17mm to maybe 18mm ?

most i've seen come with a small tool to remove the caps (bit like sugar tongs!) i've had them on cars before (as standard) and they've all been fine - only one rubbish tyre firm damaged a few but they did pay for replacements!

Thanks a lot everyone, particularly for the link to the actual chrome covers and the photos!

The photo of them before is exactly what each wheel of my Aygo looks like.

I shall get some of these ordered from Rockport I think - its the 17mm ones I need - is that correct?

Thanks

they are metal not plastic

Be carefull with fitting metal caps; the two different metals can cause an electrolytical reaction

when exposed to (salty) water, which may fuse the cap and bolt together. If the fit is tight this

gets worse, as the liquid can creep in the seems due to the small seam working as a capilary vessel.

If your car's still under warranty you should try your dealer first, but it seems a bit of a lottery as to whether they'll change 'em for nothing. Some seem to, and some refuse.

I had rusty wheel bolts on the Auris I bought a few months back and when I mentioned it to the salesman he said it had already been noted and were due to be replaced when they serviced the car prior to delivery.

If they refuse you should try throwing your toys out of the pram, it sometimes works. :ffs:

Otherwise you'll have to buy the natty covers mentioned above, or new bolts from Mr T.
