You need a diagnostic check on this to get the fault code. If everything is working Ok it may be one of the Lambada sensors on exhaust.

If you have owned the car from new, and it has a solid service history it owuld be worth calling Toyota Customer Relations as they may possibly reduce the parts cost for you.

Surprised it's the manifold not the cat/lambda sensors tbh

HI matey

Had this problem (ie engine management light come on) the day i purchased my 2001 SR avensis a month back whilst driving it home! Contacted my Toyota dealer immediately...they asked if the car had been low on fuel and whether the Battery was dead...they were right on both matters as the petrol light was on during test drive and the guy i bought it from had to jump charge the Battery as it had been standing for 2 weeks...apparently this can trigger the engine man.light....soooo...i went to a local garage...agreed to diagnostic check it for a tenner (talked him down from £50...then £25...etc etc)...found out it was 1 of the lambda sensors....he reset it for me...everythings fine since. I did find out afterwards that i had a small crack in my exhaust just before the cat.converter....got this welded...so may be that triggered it as it was burning too rich. Who knows in your case but its def.worth getting a diagnostic check...tells you everything...but dont go to a toyota dealer....ripoff!

Even better get yourself an ODB ii fault reader. I got one for 25quid its a u480 ODB ii reader. Toyota charge more than that just to read the codes!

To AJO,

I think you will do very well out of Toyota if you can knock the price a bit. Your 2003 model comes with a non programmable (will stand corrected) ECM, thus when it is at fault it fools the Oxygen sensors into fault mode which results in over- fuelling that destroys the cat. Make sure they test Oxygen sensors as well.

Good Luck, Beagh.

The cat is part of the exhaust manifold.

Fitted a manivertor and new ECU to an Avensis yesterday myself.

I think the fault code is P0420. Cat system efficiency below threshold (Bank1)

Hi Mart,

I have the same problem in my 03 avensis. P0420 fault code. Could you please tell me where to buy the ecu from? But my car never had a problem in clearing the MOT. Should I change the ECU and cat or just changing the cat would be enough?

Thanks,
