Random Smoke From D-car

Hi,

I have spotter random smoke behind my 2006 D-CAT Avensis. It is difficult to describe but it happens when I drive only few kilometers and then stop or slow down and go to 2nd gear and accelerate up to 3000/rpm and go to 3rd and again accelerate up to 3000.

Normally I wouldnt be concerned but once Avensis smokes it smokes for 10 or so seconds and I have big cloud behind my car. It happens only from time to time and seems be affected by temperature outside.

Is it possible that temperatures are the problem? I drive within 10km and engine is not completely in normal temperatures or is it turbo or injection? Car seems to have good power and acceleration, turbo doesnt do any strange whisling sound.

Thanks for help.

sounds like it's the DPF regenerating in which case it's normal.

If it is very cold and the DPF re-generates the temperature in the exhaust suddenly rises and when the hot air meets the very cold water droplets in the exhaust outlet very large plumes of steam (white looking smoke) which is water vapour exists the exhaust.

It is rare for the DPF to re-generate at cold engine temps or at slow speeds. I should only happen occasionally, and will only re-generate based on the sensor information / soot quantities. And only last for 10 seconds. Did for me.

Its more likely to happen in the very cold weather as the temp's in the engine and exhaust don't get hot enough, even if the engine is fully warm but there is a lot of stop start driving. A lot of soot is produced but not burn't off. And, it can even happen in summer but of course you do not notice it then because the air temperature is warmed and you do not notice the steam.
