I didn't know this Toyota guide existed, and it does a better job than I do of showing you how to get everything out and all that, so here's the link -- http://techdoc.toyota-europe.com/legacy/To...20001_904_0.pdf

EDIT

I just finished installing a new stereo into my Auris, since I couldn't really find much of a guide on the net, I took some pics so maybe it'll help someone else.

It took me about 2 hours total, including time fishing for a damn runaway bolt

First of all, the parts I needed were,

My stereo - http://www.sony.ie/product/ica-in-car-usb-...-ipod/cdx-gt33u

Fascia plate (got Halfords to order it for me) - Autoleads DFP-11-12

Standard Toyota - ISO adapter - Can be got in any car parts shop

Tools - Screwdrivers, socket wrench etc etc

Some screws

------------------------------------------

Here's how the stereo looks before I started..

The first thing to do is to remove the silver bits at the side. I did this using a small screwdriver. You simply have to get in underneath it and maneuver until the clips release, see the photos below

Do this for both sides of the stereo.

Now, you want to pull the air blower part above the stereo out so it is out of your way. Just apply a little force and it will slip out of the 2 clips, one either side. Leave this resting on the dash anywhere.

You are able to see into the side of the stereo now, you are looking for 4 bolts facing you (not the ones on the side of the stereo), 2 either side. On each side, one of the bolts is a few inches further back than the other.

Use a socket wrench, I found a head of size 10mm worked well, to remove these bolts. --IMPORTANT-- Be very careful taking them out, as they can easily fall down into the centre of the car, and you don't want that to happen! (It happened to me, I used a magnet to get the bolt out, but I was lucky I could see it, it is unlikely you will be able to get it back if it does fall)

Now you will be able to remove the stereo! Like the air blower above, you should be able to slide the stereo out of its clips without too much difficulty.

Remove all the wires from the back of the stereo and pull it clear. Take your ISO adapter and plug in the required wires. They are colour coded so its not difficult. The section on the very left of the pic below doesn't seem to have a slot in the ISO adapter I used, I'm not sure what it is for. I left it disconnected and everything worked fine.

Now you're going to need to take off the mounting brackets on the side of the old stereo so that you can put them on the new stereo. Just unscrew the 4 screws. Usually you use the 'cage' supplied with most new stereos but it doesn't fit the mounting brackets so you don't use it.

If you put the brackets up to the new stereo, you will find that some of the holes on the bracket will line up with those on the side of the new stereo. 2 or 3 will do, you need to screw the brackets to the new stereo. These screws weren't supplied, so I had to find ones that would fit.

Hope the image below is clear enough, it was dark and I had to use the flash

Now, hook up your new stereo to the wires from the ISO cable, it's a good idea now to test it, so start the engine and see does the stereo work. Is the power working? Is the radio picking up stations? Are the Speakers outputting? If the answers are all yes, you're sorted. Turn off the engine before continuing.

Take your fascia plate and slide your new stereo into it so it sits flush with the front of the fascia. Most seem to come with a tray, so slide that in too.

Put the fascia and stereo into the console so the bolts you removed earlier line up. The bottom should be flush with the AC controls below. It should also click into the 4 clip slots

You now need to replace the bolts you removed. This is a pain in the ***** because the fascia plate leaves little room for maneuvering. I used the extension on my socket wrench and some blu-tack to make the bolt stick to the wrench. Again be VERY CAREFUL with the bolts as they could still fall down the centre. Tighten up all four bolts and the stereo should be very secure.

Now just slide the air blower back in and finally, all you gotta do is clip back on the silver parts and you're done :)

If I've left anything out let me know, and if you have any questions, I'd be happy to help

Here's the finished product, I'm very happy with it. The fascia is completely black, whereas the interior is slightly grey but the difference isn't really noticeable

Glad to hear you dropped a bolt, I don't feel so silly now!

As for the sides of the radio, I had seen the pic showing the plastic tool getting in behind them, and put down tape and all that, but I couldn't seem to get in under them from that side. I just posted what worked for me.

As for that Toyota tech doc, DOH...if I'd had that, I wouldn't have had any issues, and wouldn't have bothered putting together the guide! I've stuck that link at the top of the post, it's a better guide than mine.

It is a very good fit, all the clips line up nicely. The stereo fitted really perfectly, I was surprised at how well it went in

The bottom slides in very nicely and reassuringly clicks into place. The top part isn't as solid, it slides in, feels secure, but isn't as rock solid as the bottom part, it moves a little bit if you put pressure on it. Once you put back on the air diffuser though you don't need to worry.

I didn't have to bend it or force it at all. Then only issue is that it's a pain to get a socket wrench at the bolts in the back after you put the fascia on. Can be done, but it's fiddly, and you have to be very careful not to lose a bolt as you put them back in.
