Hi guys

I just wanted to know if there were any negatives in using studdable winter tyres without the studs?

Cheers

They will not grip the road as well as tyres with studs fitted ;)

The link you show links to an American tyre supplier...........good information but not always relevant to UK.......(Car models are different in USA)

Try this for UK winter tyre info:

thanks very much for the links, I think I should be granted my own page on both sites due to the amount of time ive been on both. Ive changed my mind about the pirellis and am now going for the VREDESTEIN SNOWTRAC 3. I have heard nothing but good things about them and found them at just under £90 each in 205 60 16s

just checked this site out, very good but i came upon a rather worrying if not scary quote about the michelins which are standard on all the gen3 with 17" wheels. see below:

The Michelin Pilot Primacy is a Grand Touring Summer tyre that was developed to meet the needs of sporty luxury coupe and saloon drivers who want comfort and tread life along with performance.

Used as original equipment, the Pilot Primacy also focuses on enhancing wet weather traction and hydroplaning resistance.Like all summer tyres, the Pilot Primacy is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

anyone else think this is more than a bit scary with the current weather we are having??

have to add that i have not had a moment of trouble from my gen3 with the above tyres in the snow and ice.

but i am also very fortunate to be able to use a rav4 at the moment whilst we are in the grips of this latest load of snow, so the prius is tucked up the garage at home.

I know, but it's about the only site that I could find that describes direct test comparisons between studdable tyres with and without studs and that is what the original question was about.

I guess that is why the Prius handbook, in its advice on winter driving, recommends fitting winter tyres . . . . . :)
