Anyone Tried Tracker Devices?

Our charity had 2 good vans nicked 3 weeks ago. £22k worth.

we have 2 other trucks and a genny, forklift and am looking at fitting/getting fitted a tracking device if those get stolen. Also thinking of a tracker for both RAVs are they are both unique, but would be worth a few bob if stolen and broken up by some thieving MR2 owner.....(ooops - sorry - respect CFC)(thats me banned for ever from being a mudgerator!)

Anybody had any experience of tracker at their work?? I'm not really interested in fitting wheel locks etc as thats just a nuisance for an old man of my age. The insurance price for a 1994 RAV is probably £3 6s 2p but to me its a unique car worth much much more so don't mind shelling out if I get a chance to bomb any thievein bsts who manage to take the thing....altho its likely anyone taking it would kill themselves at the first corner. However the charity also needs to protect its plant and trucks too. Any ideas about planting mines in the parking lot can be dismissed as its thick concrete. I've thought about connecting the stuff to 415 volts, but some clown triued to steal a copper cable carrying 11KV in the shed near us - he got blown thru a window and survived...altho the polis were looking for a fried egg ( sorry body) the next day. the guy was taken to a hospital ina well done state. So 415 volts aint going to deter em!!

My last place of work used these http://www.vehicle-tracking-aeromark.co.uk/home/index.php

I think there is a cheap solution thou. Basically a gps system linked to a mobile phone. Once car is stolen, you can text the phone and it will return the position of where the car is in real time. can be linked to google maps etc.

Girl at work has one fitted in her new Porsche 911 (and she looks after my teams admin duties... ;) ;) ) any how... this tracker has to be with the driver at all times. If not the Tracker operator calls the registered owner phone numbers to check they are actually in the car.. if not they can disable the car and notify the police....

She left the tracker responder in the office once... got just outside the business park where we work and Tracker called her.... that's about 100 meters down the road....

My neighbour fits tracking systems to both road and off-road vehicles and also lorry containers, etc.

In the interest of security it is best that such applications be done discreetly. Installations are usually done outside of normal working hours.

Systems can be tailored to specific needs anything from unauthorised use to asset tracking. The company he works for can provide wordwide tracking if needs be. Obvously the cost can vary depending on the level of protection. I have pesonal experience of using their equipment and have found it to be very reliable.

See link below for company information.

our vans have trackers, but i've been told you can buy a jammer that fits into cigar lighter, ( quityourjabber.com) so if a thief

Knew you had a tracker he could plug one of these in & disable tracker before he removes device so if you fit a tracker

it would best to keep it secret.

Hi BB, I had a Tracker on my Subaru they are fitted as standard to the UK spec STi. It works as said earlier, if the car is taken it will activate an alarm at the control centre, they will contact you if you say that it is a false alarm the will cancel it, if not they will contact the police etc. I only ever had one false alarm. The main fault/problem 99% of Subarus had was that they would have a flat Battery after just 5 days ( but they have a small lightweight battery), there was then a new version I had fitted under warrenty that would, if the car remaind locked and alarmed, would "go to sleep" after 1 hour instead of the original 6 hours. ( don't know what it did diferent when sleeping as to when awake) this helped but I used to leave it on charge in the end. I'm not sure of the fitted price but I'm sure I read it was up to £1000 installed, then about £135 per year or £360 for life of your ownership. the one I had was Trackstar and you could pay more subscription for things like speed camera and satnav. Hope this helps Mike

When I bought the X3 the UK insurance companies insisted that it had to have a Tracker system. On the Isle of Man we don,t have a facility for either fitting the system and the IOM police force do not opperate a Tracker system on island. What I had to do was get an on island Insurance company to do the business. Makes you think when they insist on a tracker but due to limitations on island you can,t have one fitted or get it to work!!!!!!

Can't for the life of me remember the actual name given to these things, but I'm sure you can buy smart phones (with GPS) on eBay (? etc) which come bundled with some nifty software installed on them. You hide the phone somewhere in your car. Should your car ever get nicked you phone up this special smart phone and it tells (texts?) you it's GPS location. You then go around with ten of your mates and 11 baseball bats....

I think they only cost about £150 too... quite a cunning and cheap way of 'tracking' your vehicle!
